Trainer Eddie Plesa, Jr. is counting on the Grade 2, $400,000 Kelso Handicap to propel Grade 1 Woodward winner #7 Itsmyluckyday into any one of three races, among them the 1 ¼-mile Classic at Santa Anita Park on November 1.
Plesa, however, says he knows what his horse is capable of and that either of the Breeders' Cup races remain an option, even though it would cost $120,000 (Mile) or $200,00 (Classic) to supplement Itsmyluckyday to the race. "We know he can go a mile, and last year he finished second at 1 3/16 miles, and he's a lot bigger and stronger than he was in the Preakness," said Plesa of the 4-year-old Lawyer Ron colt, owned by Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa. "We have options, and after the race we'll make some decisions. The Classic is definitely on the radar." Under high weight of 121 pounds, including jockey Paco Lopez, Itsmyluckyday will leave from the outside post position 7 as the 4-5 favorite on the morning line. |

In her only other start at Belmont Park, she was third in the Grade 1 Frizette last October. Pletcher skipped the 1 1/16-mile Cotillion for 3-year-old fillies at Parx Racing on September 20 with Stopchargingmaria, citing the timing, distance, opportunity to try older horses and not having to ship as deciding factors. "One thing we were looking at with the Beldame was the fact that she does run very well fresh," Pletcher said. "The extra week might have been a little bit of a difference, but also the mile-and-an-eighth suits her well. She has three wins at a mile-and-an-eighth and now a mile-and-a-quarter win. It seems like she appreciates a little time between races, but she also seems to like the added distance, as well." Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez has the mount from post position 3 on Stopchargingmaria, who gets a three-pound break in weights as the only 3-year-old filly. She will carry 120 pounds and was listed as the 5-2 favorite on the morning line. |
