Does "vanned off" mean the horse was fatally injured in US racing?

Not necessarily. Means a significant injury, but the horses do frequently come back and start racing again.

Many fatally horses have to be shot at the track, and if that had happened, the notes would say it. Obviously you don't see that very often in Past Performances since, well, if the horse had been put down, you wouldn't be likely to see it race again....
