Highly unlikely after the deal with the California racing board to legalize exchange wagering from May next year.

Discovering on occasion a post by one of the "old timers" on here is like watching a Romulan bird-of-pray de-cloaking right in front of your eyes :-)

Question for Bluenose: Can you please shed some light on the "deal with California racing board" you mention in your post? I've been following Betfair's efforts to enter the US market closely with a lot of interest and I'm not aware of any approved deals that legalize exchange betting nor that Betfair will be the chosen platform if that day ever arrives, so your comment leaves me confused. TYIA.

Since legalizing exchange betting would require changing Federal statues, wouldn't any plans to implement exchange betting in California by May 2012 (at the earliest) is beyond the control of the State legislature and the California Horse Racing Board, no? Perhaps one of the Betfair managers can provide an explanation as I'm sure a lot of punters on here would be interested in knowing.

Cal. horsemen are asking for a large cut. BF would have to charge a 10 % commission to satisfy them. U.S. doesn't like that people can bet horses to lose for obvious reasons. They would probably charge a higher rate on gains from laying or gov't may impose an extra tax. Also heard that the pools would only be available to U.S. only.  Doesn't look too promising for Betfair ????

angeleyes, what Betfair charges in commission to punters is quite irrelevant. What is relevant is what percentage of the net revenue potentially derived from opening the California market to Betfair is Betfair willing to return to the industry in California. They are used to getting a lot more for their product through their current tote wagering agreements (see below) than what Betfair is currently returning to the UK racing industry. Reach agreement first on that and then you have to deal with the two other elephants in the room. The cannibalization of exist tote pools and if Betfair is willing to offer a better deal to the US authorities then why not the UK?

The issue is far more complex than most punters on here understand.

here,s what I heard the other day...HRTV in the US has the picture rights for Santa Anita for the Fall meet...TVG or BF as we know it has said they will pay HRTV for the pictures and pay them there part of the handle from the tote....seems like a good deal, but there is a lot of bad blood going back a long time it would appear
