Not disputing the fact that youve got a satellite dish only the fact that you lied on here by saying that you watched US racing while in Cyprus on a channel that only broadcasts on 95 west(think its called RTN but may have been called something else in the past). If you want to believe it thats fine by me. I also had many hallucinations the last time i was in cyrpus. By the way I suggested pole length would be 4000 miles high, not 4000 feet with a little bend to peep over that tricky thing called the horizon.
You even had me fooled at the time you said it so I emailed the channel and they told myself, and i beleive jas also asked them, not possible as the beam is only aimed at North America and I asked if it was possible on a satellite forum and these were the replies from February 2010.
Would it be possible to pick up USA channels on 95 west with an 8ft dish in UK or Cyprus?
reply 1
No m8 anything beyond your horizon is invisible to your dish even with a big dish in the UK 68.5 East to 61 West is possible. reply 2
hi m8, im 99% certain that you cant due to the fact that the satellite is over the horizon in the uk and the footprint is focused on the usa. you really need skytel or william 1 to give you a definate answer, regards reply 3
According to the "Satellite Antenna Calculator", which is handy little programme for working out where to aim a dish for any particular satellite, you would need to be at 20 degrees WEST of the Greenwich meridian to even be able "See" this satellite. That puts you roughly 400 miles off the coast of Ireland! Further more it is beamed at North & South America, so even then you would need a very big dish...
As for Cyprus - forget it. Sorry!
But if you say it happened then I believe you and I wont bother looking at your reply. I will say that you are the king of betfair and everything you say is true. Thanks again for solving one of the worlds problems regarding satellites.

Is it possible to view American Channels in Europe? (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, WB, HBO etc )
Sorry it is NOT possible, they generally don't reach to Europe due to the footprints of the Satellite and the curve of the earth which means many of the US Satellites are below the horizon.

Am I correct in thinking that if a dish is high enough above sea level, then you can see more satellites east or west than at sea level?
If yes, then is there some sort of formula or rule or thumb to figure out how high you must go e.g. how high must a dish be to see a satellite that would normally be 1 degree below the horizon at sea level?
Whow I'm sure you could do it but the dish would have to be very large to view anything.
I wasn't thinking so much of increasing the dish size, more moving it to a high altitude location e.g. mountain!
PAS4 * 72E is beyond the horizon for me but the footprint still shows a strong signal suitable for a small dish. Just wondering if it's theoretically possible? Or is the footprint wrong - if I can't see the satellite, can the satellite 'see' me?
You should have a mountain which is hundreds kilometers high. So you just can not see satellite which is below horizon.
Ok, theoretically high mountain can give advantage if satellite is exactly on horizon, or for example just 0.5 degrees over horizon. Maybe ground noise can be lower then if mountain would be for example 5km high.

Introduction What follows isn't exactly a 'FAQ', but an attempt to give some answers to the questions that face those who want to install satellite TV at their home. It concerns European satellites and my background is Scandinavia, but the issues should be similar throughout Europe.
** Before we start, however, let me dispose of the most common question that actually crops up: No, you cannot watch US satellite channels when you are in Europe. Nor can you watch European satellites in the US. Your antenna (the satellite dish) cannot receive signals from satellites under the horizon, and since the earth is round, US satellites are under Europe's horizon. Europe and the Middle East, however, is basically one area, and a dish in Sweden can pick up the same signals as those in Tunisia, and vice versa.
That said, we will proceed in the order of choices that a viewer interested in satellite TV will have to face. First, we will look at hardware choices, and what they imply; then we will survey what kind of satellite channels you can expect to pick up with the different options of hardware discussed.

Although not by strict definition terrestrial TV DX, satellite UHF TVRO reception is related in certain aspects. For example, reception of satellite signals requires sensitive receiving systems and large outdoor antenna systems. However, unlike terrestrial TV DX, satellite UHF TV reception is far easier to predict. The geosynchronous satellite at 22,375 miles (36,009 km) height is a line of sight reception source. If the satellite is above the horizon, it can be generally received, if it is below the horizon, reception is not possible.

Last one for you tonight comedian as your ignorance is boring me now. Ive done some more googling and tried to find it in simple laymans terms for you. Ive highlighted the parts you seem to have trouble understanding. If you have any questions I'll be back on here Sunday. Maybe melanie has a satellite detective who could shed some light on this case like she did with the IRS and the kernel investigations?
QUESTION 4.
Can I get channels from the USA?
ANSWER 4.
There is very little American TV in the sky. Usually a few news channels. It is very unlikely you would find a sport channels. To understand this you have to consider the Physics. The Earth is round, not flat and microwaves (like light) travel in straight lines. Satellites above the States are beyond our horizon. Only if US channels are relayed onto European satellites would we be able to see them. This mainly seems to happen with free channels. Mostly news, however, Fox Sport and Fox News are available in the clear from Pas 3 at 43 West. This requires an 90cm dish. From the UK we can see satellites from about 60W to 60W so it the sat is (e.g.) 115 degrees etc. we can't see it Even if it is within 60E to 60W you also need to check the footprints on www.lyngsat.com as well as the positions. QUESTION 5.
I am British and I have moved to America. Can I see British TV in America?
ANSWER 5.
This is not possible. The reasons for this are to do with the laws of Physics. The Earth is round not flat and microwaves (like light) travels in straight lines. Satellites above our horizon are beyond your horizon. Only if UK channels were to be relayed onto US satellites would you be able to see them. You are in a better position to find that out than we are.

bluenose, I don't understand why you are being so obstinate to be honest. "I've done some more googling" is not exactly the way to win this debate. Not just the Canadian but also another person who lived in Cyprus for a while posted that US TV reception is possible in Cyprus. Evidence on the ground contradicts your googling efforts. Besides, the Canadian provided the installer's name and number to verify his claim and his claim includes not just any US TV but specific dedicated racing feeds. The refusal to place a simple phone call may be indicative of your level of confidence in all your assertions. Your "and why should I believe him" is about as weak an argument as ever posted on here. Since when has "googling efforts" become the only source of legitimacy and actual installer testimony simply dismissed? Sorry, bluenose, the lemmings who despise the Canadian may be on your side, but any reasonable person would not. Call and verify or give up, those are the only two options open to you at this time.

Menelaus/thecanadian you both make out to be intelligent people on here and you have cleverly now switched from watching RTN which broadcasts on 95 west to a line of "not just any US TV but dedicated racing feeds". Very clever and obviously your googling paid off.
I know a man who swears Elvis is alive and well and works in Tesco Express. Do you want his number to phone him up to have this fact verified?
Unfortunately the thread where the lies were posted was from February last year so has probably disappeared now.
Why cant supposed intelligent people understand something so simple as a fact that if a satellite is below your horizon it can not be seen. Just imagine how many dishes youve seen pointing into the ground to see a satellite?
A simple but factual website where you can put in your location and it will tell you what satellites you can see. Put in any location in Cyprus or anywhere in Europe for that matter and then select the satellite 95 west and you get the simple factSatellite below horizon!
Going out now but I will look in later for the latest installment of how to defy physics and watch any TV station you want.

Bluenose, it sounds like you have your mind made up, it's your prerogative. With the exception of the Canadian inviting you in his home and physically showing you, nothing else will seem to satisfy you. I don't think that's about to happen any time soon. As far as I'm concerned, "call the installer" carries a lot more weight than "I did some more googling" but that's only my opinion and at the end of the day I don't give a to$$ to be honest. Good luck with your trades today.

Bluenose, I think your obstinacy has reached a new level. I have no doubt the emails you cut and pasted are genuine, after all you're not Billy, but I'm struggling to understand something. I've reviewed all the posts on both threads on this subject, and you are the only one who has brought an outfit RTN and ASTROSAT into this discussion. Just because evidently RTN is incapable of providing service to Cyprus, should this be interpreted that no else can?

RTN or racetrack television network(now part of DishNetwork also unavailable in Cyprus) is the station that thecanadian claimed to have viewed while in Cyprus. Astrosat is a random satellite company in cyprus i emailed this morning
Just because evidently RTN is incapable of providing service to Cyprus, should this be interpreted that no else can? I only know of TVG, HRTV and RTN that show horsracing on a daily basis in North America. They all broadcast on satellites that are beamed at North America on satellites that can not be viewed in Europe because they are below the horizon so that would be a yes.
There is big difference between obstinacy and stating facts. Hope this helps but i doubt it will.

It's funny how you have enough time to write emails but not enough time to pick up the phone for a couple of minutes. You can ask to find out about the equipment used, the dish orientation and the programming provider. Is it because it just might not support you limited view of this subject, or is it because you can't afford 50 cents for the call?

comedian You're right I dont have 50c to waste on a phone call. I know and you know the truth and i dont think anyone else cares so to save me the money why dont you simply post the dish orientation here so I can ridicule you again on Sunday? Equipment used is irrelevant in this instance. Programme provider you've already told the forum last year its RTN or whatever it used to be called at the time. Its no big secret is it? In running finished 4-5 years ago so you wont be giving anything away.
