I have been watching this racing on and off for a while now, and without any doubt I reckon it is bordering on taking the mick. There are so many seriously crooked rides it is laughable. Now I know some of you love it, and no doubt will refer to some of the dross dished up in the UK. However, in the US. it appears to be in almost EVERY race!  I am amazed anyone bothers turning up at the tracks. Some of you regulars no doubt will do quite well , and therefore feel I am being grossly unfair. I just go by what I am watching, what I see, and believe me, I dont ever bet on the US races. Motionless jockeys on market drifters, favs that wouldnt blow out a candle and trail home? Corrupt and rotten through and through.

It is fair to say this game is not for you.

Laying the fav @ parx. Not a great field, but enough questions marks over its form to suggest 1.8 may be a little short

Jas to be fair u are a good judge but many times u have bemoaned a jocks performance.I have seen a few times this happen and u say that youre off and log out. This is not your form that is wrong but the crooked work of some yards or jocks or as u mention sometimes they lol.

Just my thoughts and  not a criticism although i personally feel the O.P. is being fairly accurate .

I think (Thickett) you are reflecting how difficult it is to make any money in the long run from betting on horses - whether selecting winners or losers for those who lay! There are I believe only a handful who may succeed at this (and we all know who they are Jas, Mr Q, Spiller and 1 or 2 I may have missed). Horses are in the main unpredictable whether they are the favourite in a race or not. And to compound the difficulty, some jockeys are clearly (as in all fields of life), more skilful than others (some are awful) - this is seen time and time again. So mix all this together, and I find it amazing how many selections of the aforementioned do turn out as winners! In my (humble) opinion you are just defining this complexity as "corrupt" (unless I really am totally naive).
Report fawwon • January 2, 2011 5:38 PM GMT
The part you highlighted is absolute dribble.
Report KiltedtroozerMan • January 2, 2011 5:39 PM GMT
not only is it fairly accurate, but it seems to me that starting on time is not a particular issue to the americans either!!
Report Menelaus • January 2, 2011 5:39 PM GMT
If EVILROYSLADE is suggesting that THEY are fleecing most if not all punters on here, then his post is spot on. Not fairly accurate but right on the mark, all three darts in 50 point bullseye spot on.
Report Wazman • January 2, 2011 5:41 PM GMT
WELL, WELL, WELL. It is unfair and corrupt that the 1st 3 well backed favs have all dotted up!! And yes some hot favs don't perform - animals not machines!!
Report KiltedtroozerMan • January 2, 2011 5:42 PM GMT
fawwon, are you saying by default that american racing is free from all of the above highlighted?
Report fawwon • January 2, 2011 5:46 PM GMT
If it was rotten to the core there would be no point using past performances that work perfectly well at the tracks I play at.
Some of the horses that are beat at short odds have little chance of winning anyway.
Punters should look at their own selection methods.

Wazman, 3 weeks ago on a Saturday night I put 40 lay bets, all on favs - and 36 succeeded i.e 36 favs lost (a most profitable night). The following Saturday night, of my first 16 lay bets, again all favs, 14 of the favs won - this wiped out all my winnings from the previous Saturday and more some. Yes indeed, well said - "horses are not machines". I do not believe either of the 2 nights (win or loss) was caused by a corrupt industry.
Report swift one • January 2, 2011 5:54 PM GMT
At the end of the day gambling is by its very nature risky, one horse must win and the rest lose, we back the one we thing has the best chance of winning and which bet has the greatest value, **** or not, we will still place our bets where we see fit. we will win some and lose some thats why its called gambling.
Report Wazman • January 2, 2011 5:56 PM GMT
Sechar. I think you have read me wrong... I am saying its NOT corrupt and the rest.. I wouldn't bet on it nightly if I believed it was.  We agree my man...
Report Wazman • January 2, 2011 6:01 PM GMT
Sechar - sorry I have read you wrong.  Anyway we agree..
Report Sechar • January 2, 2011 6:03 PM GMT
Yes I know we agree Wazman - I was indeed agreeing with your comment "horses are not machines". By calling whatever form of gambling "corrupt" helps one to bear the losses we sometimes make i.e. it helps us to rationalise that it is not our judgement that is at fault (as that could not possibly be the case as we are all experts of course), but the corrupt industry!

I totally disagree with that statement , my P/L  is almost identical 2010  as it was in 2006
Report KiltedtroozerMan • January 2, 2011 6:31 PM GMT
my honest response to that jas is that your p/l is irrelevant.
Report jas1968 • January 2, 2011 6:34 PM GMT
I can understand your reply but IMO  the game is no different to when I first started betting US 10 yrs ago.

My final post on the issue and I wish you luck .
Report KiltedtroozerMan • January 2, 2011 6:42 PM GMT
sorry jas, i have mislead you -  unintentional i mite add - i was talking specifically about brit racing, but to some extent american racing is not isolated by any means. i used to trade on american racing too years ago, and i used to buy form, but nowadays i actually punt at random and i dare say probably do better than i did. same with brit racing, i  don't do any homework! anyway jas, good luck for 2011. it would be interesting to find out... me picking at random and you doing yer homework what the results would be.....
Report Menelaus • January 2, 2011 6:44 PM GMT
jas, assuming all your income is earned through trading, if your P/L is almost identical in 2010 as it was in 2006, then you are earning 14pc less money based on inflation statistics reported by the government and 20pc less in real terms in 2010 than you did in 2006.

That's one serious pay cut any way you look at it.

Thanks for all the replies chaps. either for or against. I must allude to one particular set to I had With Mick Naughton ( of William Hill radio "fame"). I emailed them regarding an absolutely blatant "bad ride by a jock on the all weather at Southwell. The jockey was about as animate as a dead frog on the horses back, and trailed home behind the front three when it would have been easier to win. Naughton was nothing short of abusive in his dismissal of what was obvious to all. The forum was just as angry as me at the appalling ride by the way. HE slammed me for suggesting what was obvious. Only TWO DAYS LATER HE WENT COMPLETELY MENTAL REGARDING A RIDE GIVEN TO A HORSE HE HAD OBVIOUSLY BACKED. The air was almost blue with his anger. The jockey was nothing short of dodgy was what he wanted to say. I have no problem with incompetent riders who try their best. My problem is with those who are only good when the money is down. Best O luck all.

Bute is the real devil here. It allows horses to run through pain, allowed on some circuits not on others. Can create a real problem handicapping a horse almost shot.
Report Menelaus • January 4, 2011 9:26 AM GMT
rink rat came to the realization that you can't do even deplorable Phoenix for 25 dollars a day and decided to tough it out in the arctic confines on Canada. Better luck next year, may be the USD will be worth 10 cents Canadian and you could afford to go then.

Yeah, rink rat, I am The Canadian, eh?

Actually went to Tampa, like that better. Phoenix only makes sense for me if the NBA goes on strike next year. We'll see. Happy

"motionless jockeys"?
it's dirt racing in North America....it's not predominately turf. Therefore they ride quietly and try to race nice fractions, horses aren't ridden out for a finish on dirt as they are too tired.Jocks nurse their mounts home rather than throw the kitchen sink at em.
