it depends on where you place your bet.

If you place your bet on Betfair, just look at "rules" in the "Place Market", (e.g. 2 to be placed, 3 to be placed).

On the American tote there are two different kinds of place bets, "place" and "show". If you bet a horse to place, you get paid if the horse comes first or second, if you be a horse to show, you get paid if the horse comes first, second or third.
