What's with these? Why are Grade 1 races handicaps and not even weights? Is it just reflective of the prize money?

I don't think it has anything to do with prize money, probably more to do with tradition.

BTW, Melbourne Cup is a G1 race and is a handicap as well.

They ARE Handicaps, but they don't really weight them properly....weights have a very narrow range, and max out at about 8 st 12 usually.  They are truly just GROUP races, with slightly different rules.
