The unfair bit is as usual the thrifty suffer while the spendthrift don't suffer an iota.
I'm off to spend my money before the same happens here. |

This is all about ENERGY. It's a fight for redrawing the EU's energy map, it's not about an insignificant 6bn euro that could have been created out of thin air in a nano second.
Start to see the big picture. Gazprom Offers Cyprus Restructuring Deal to Avoid EU Bailout Russian energy giant Gazprom has offered the Republic of Cyprus a plan in which the company will undertake the restructuring of the country’s banks in exchange for exploration rights for natural gas in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone, local media reported http://greece.greekreporter.com/2013/03/18/gazprom-offers-cyprus-restructuring-deal-to-avoid-eu-bailout/ |

Melanus on the one hand your saying the Cyprus situation was all about the EU getting their hands on gas reserves but on the other hand you say Russia is likely to do a deal for the gas reserves in Cyprus.

What are his third and fourth hands thinking? He'll cite whichever one comes to fruition as evidence of his greatness for sure.

Melanus on the one hand your saying the Cyprus situation was all about the EU getting their hands on gas reserves but on the other hand you say Russia is likely to do a deal for the gas reserves in Cyprus. Really, I said that? I didn't know that perhaps because I never did. The basic problem with you mugs on here is not a lack of knowledge in economics, it's a lack of english language comprehension. |

I thought you said in the opening paragraph that the Cyprus situation is not about money but rather energy and the eu wanted that energy to lessen its dependency on russia.
|
|
By:
Unless i am missing something it looks odds on that the opposite will happen and russia will do a deal with Cyprus for the gas reseves in its waters.

What the EU wanted to happen (a YES vote) to the confiscation of private property (haircut on bank deposits), and what has actually happened are two different things. This is still playing out. The EU may still get its way. If anything however, Russia getting immediately involved proposing loans that involve a commitment for Russia to develop Cyprus' natural gas finds is CONFIRMATION what the real plum everybody is going after is all about. Also, the EU's rejection of the Cyprus government's Plan B (Russian investors buy the insolvent Laiki bank who has been cut-off of ECB emergency liquidity support) is further confirmation that the EU doesn't want the Russians getting involved in relief for Cyprus and thus in the future being able to exert significant influence over, you guessed it, the development and distribution of Cyprus' vast natural gas finds. Evidently not so to you though. This is a very high stakes war over energy resources. The average person on the street is totally unaware it because there are no guns being fired, just a financial warfare, with Cyprus being a mere pawn and victim. |

Fair enough but i get the impression even you think the EU were naive in their thinking. I mean Cyprus were going to say or no to the deal. It would be reasonable to think what the likely scenarios would be if they said no to the deal proposed by the EU especially with Russia having such a vested interest.
