I've always found it strange when posters use this phrase
" who would listen/take a trade based on what someone said in a forum"?
My attitude is I'm always open to a winner no matter what the source.
Now conclusive proof that you can win by following forums.

that link refers to a 25 million pound hedge fund that is about to open using twitter as its basis.
Last fall, Indiana University informatics professor Johan Bollen stumbled upon an astonishing connection: The social network Twitter could predict swings in the Dow Jones Industrial Average with 87 percent accuracy.
Six months, numerous inquiries, and one Caribbean brainstorming session later, Bollen is a consultant to a soon-to-be-opened U.K. hedge fund betting that 25 million sterling and one killer app will be enough to generate double-digit investment returns.
The fund, Derwent Capital, is scheduled to open for trading in early April. Run by a young entrepreneur with a background in foreign-exchange trading, the fund will use quantitative models to comb through millions of daily tweets and look for sentiment threads that could prove leading indicators of how stocks trade several days later.
No doubt melly will bellow loud against it but 25million pounds speaks a lot louder than that idiot.
The formation of this fund confirms what a number here already know- following winners and contrarian the losers ( posters) leads to profits.
Not too sure about this one Mr Ben. Usually in investment matters by the time the masses are onto something ( whether it be measured in tweets or whatever), the horse has bolted. But I'm not really a " modern " man, so I could be way off base here. But I will not be investing any part of my ill earned fortune in this type of fund. Call me a dinosaur if you wish.

to be honest froggy I totally agree.I would'nt invest either.
The main point of interest was, I thought,That 1. 25 million is raised and its going ahead.
2.The power of social media
3. That the social media COULD be capable of creating a momentum of its own, hence the 86.7%
4. That winners can be found from various souces, without the aid of a bloomberg terminal, an overrated education or a proprietory trading system.
melly-, carry on you poor chap, the whole thing seems to have gone totally over your head. Get back in line for your meds.

they aren't using people's stock predictions on twitter to make trades, they are selecting 10% of all tweets at random and then sorting them into categories based on the "mood" of the tweet, and using that to make trades. trying to judge sentiment of your average member of the public, and then use it to make trades has been tried before, and failed every time. maybe using twitter will be different, we shall see.
