if you work does the employer have to pay sick pay if youre off for 2 months

from what I understand from my own employer is that sick pay is discretionary....they dont have to pay you anything....but you would be entitled to statutory sick pay from the government which is fcuk all...could be totally wrong but thats what I understood!!
