i unexpectadly received a council tax rebate a few weeks ago for a property i used to live at....nice little brucie bonus. Now some solicitor wants 30% + vat. I've never spoke to a solicitor nor signed anything nor received any documentation from a solicitor. But apparantly everyone in a street i used to live solicitors have been helping homeownwers receive refunds.
Am i liable for this charge??

you never apponted him , or gave him instructions or entered into any kind of a contract with him - HTF could you be liable (except morally to someone who got you a nice lump sum out of the blue ? ).

too true `morally' is my only obligation, although it's probably the present houseowner who triggered the rebate off. I do like to pay my way but 30% + vat is far to steep, the solicitors probably did the whole road in bulk so i doubt there was any extra paper work for myself. Might ring up with an offer 10% say take it or leave

I work in the Council Tax field , I would say you owe them nothing, I can only assume your rebate comes from them making a successful appeal against the band of a property for a client who hired them for that purpose. If the local authority decided that other similar properties in the street were also incorrectly banded they would also automatically reduce those bands as what is called a consequential change. That is the only circumstance I can envisage a solicitor being even remotely involved.
