NOW WE KNOW 25 Feb 10:05
If he did contract out he will have done so with a company that had to by law guarantee

Nonsense, there was never a guarantee.

In answer to the question

HMRC will have the records of payments made to his provider (e.g. Friends Provident) although the provider should let him know of payments into his pot. Stay CO imo, at least the gov't don't owe you money then.

I've also got a contracted out SERPS thing. Took it out a couple of decades ago, and I still don't really know what's going on with it. I suppose I should check really, but as it's only the 'extra' bit of the pension, I never really pay much attention to it.

One question anyone know - is it possible to just 'cash out' your current SERPS pension amount (as a lump sum for instance)?
