Btw that reminds me, something which I forgot to post during the French open, I saw a clip of Svitolina and Kostyuk talking just before they came out to play their match....in Russian? anyone else see that

Ukrainian is very close to Russian.
woah the WTA finals will be played at Indian Wells.
Not sure how I feel about that as it might take away from the March event and last time it was held that time of the year it kinda sucked, but at least it's not China or Saudi Arabia.

I thought a lot of Russian vocab was indistinct from Ukrainian and vice versa, though just read Svitolina is a native Russian speaker and Marta Ukrainian, didn't know that.
Why don't they just play the tour finals at the 02 in London, probably all booked now but there was a gap when the tours final in ATP moved from there to Milan.
O2 might be too big. Would it sell out with no Brits and no big stars like Serena or Sharapova? I would think WTA can get better offers from other cities/venues.
plenty of American players in the top 8, so it makes lots of sense to have it there if the goal is to sell tickets. Sabalenka won't be happy about playing this event at Windian Wells.
the question is if people will travel, IW is in the middle of nowhere, like they do for the March event. But maybe with good notice they will. There was also the issue that people there only live there parts of the year, which was given as a reason why so few attended the October event in 2021.
I think it'd do well in London given how international the city is and closely connected it is to Europe, are they really going to sell out in Indian Wells?
Turin/Italy is hot for tennis at the moment, but they need to be careful and not saturate the market,

I think their main concern is what offer they got from the city/venue and they will care less about how many tickets it will sell.
yeah, you'd think London would do well enough, but they might not be willing to pay much given they have so many other events they can easily put in the O2 instead.
probably true, is there no chance there could ever be a joint tour finals ATP/WTA, that would never have to worry about ticket sales
I think IW is worth a try and then they revaluate if that market can host two big events per year.
the women probably wouldn't like that as it would take the shine from their flagship event. Unless someone made a monster bid to make it a joint event. But less likely now with the Saudis cooling on tennis.
not many shocks at Wimbledon so far. We might have a 2nd week without random names.
A joint event might even lead to bigger prize money if it meant bigger broadcasting and sponsorship deal, don't know if WTA would like it or even ATP, but they should at least look at it, would be the biggest event outside of the slams.
Svitolina biggest name to drop, looks like she is going to be the best player ever not to win a slam, best of the years have gone already
Now that Zverev has won a slam, that title in the mens imo probably belongs to Monfils, or Kyrios, though with Monfils ,edy said diving into advertising boards doesn't make you a great player

at least Noskova will be pleased to see Sorana retire.
At IW, the draw also opened up, but then she couldn't get past the Noskova hurdle and Noskova was the one who ended up making semis.
there's still Anisimova waiting in the next round so not exactly easy, but big names crashing out today.

these absolute mugs at BBC control centre, they shove Keys/Amanda from BBC1 over to the iplayer - to show some average British mug against an average Belgian mug, showing both matches simultaneously on BBC1 and BBC2 ffs
that's why all the British mugs need to lose.

Sorana puts bums on seats, could walk down any high street in the world and people would know who she is, they part like the red sea, your Noskova's of this world don't do that, her neighbours don't know who she is, life is just unfair sometimes.
