Current odds: Sinner 1.49, Djokovic 3
This is Sinner's 7th Grand Slam semifinal and second one at Wimbledon. Previous record in semifinals: 4-2
It's Djokovic's 52nd Grand Slam semifinal and 14th one at Wimbledon. Previous record in semifinals: 37-14
H2H is 5-4 Sinner which includes 4-0 in the last four meetings.

At these odds I'm going with Djokovic. Needs to up his level from the Cobolli match, but I think he's been playing well overall in this tournament and hope he has enough tricks to trouble Sinner.

i suppose the calculation he has to make is what chance do i have at the ao next year. i gave him very little chance this year so obviously i give him even less of a chance a year on. its a fair point to make though as far as for whatever reason he doesnt have to go through sinner and or carlos so proabably he will carry on
Report tobiasr July 11, 2025 5:35 PM BST
if that were to happen i mean. sinner and carlos not being in the way
Report TheCarambaExperience July 11, 2025 5:35 PM BST
I suppose it's more about feeling he's still competitive. A thrashing against Jannik would obviously be more likely to lead to retirement thoughts than if it was a close loss.

Anyway, people are having quite the expectations on Djokovic.
When Jimmy Connors made US Open SF aged 39, it was seen as a miracle feat by the near 40 year old man. I believe that he is still the oldest SF'ist.
When Novak here has made Wimbledon SF aged 38 we are disappointed that he's not putting up a bigger fight.

Just seen that Sinner lost to Tsitsipas in Rome in 2019 in Round 2, 63 62

Federer withdrew against Tsitsipas in Round 3

That's the closest he ever came to facing either Sinner or Alcaraz

neither at the level at the time anyway

This isn't really a changing of the guard moment, that happened some time ago, probably when Sinner beat him in the Davis Cup singles match and hasn't lost to him since, don't think Novak had ever lost a Singles match for Serbia before that and we know how much he loves playing for his country.

The biggest changing of the guard moment in tennis came in 2001 between Sampras and Federer, in women's it was the Indian Wells final in 99 with Graf losing to Serena.

It's not the losing, it's being obliterated that makes me think that might be it.

I think he'll retire Australian Open 2026. He'll go down as the king of down under, just as Roger is the king on grass and Rafa on clay.
Report TheCarambaExperience July 11, 2025 6:58 PM BST
AO would be logic given all the success he had there, but it wouldn't make sense to do all that off season training to then only play 3-4 weeks. That's why I am thinking Wimbledon, or maybe US Open. And for most players it takes more than one thrashing like this to pack it in.
Report mesmerised July 11, 2025 7:05 PM BST
He's not gonner retire after 1 tournament in 2025, long way to go to say goodbye in a country he's not from, where he's not universally loved even if it's his most successful slam or the fact it's not even his favourite major, which as he's told us a million times growing up as a small child 'was Wimbledon'.

He'll either retire in Belgrade which just so happens to be the last tour even on the calendar this year, or more likely play the very last tournament of the season which he will still qualify for, the Tour finals.

If not at either of those two events, it will be Wimbledon
Report mesmerised July 11, 2025 7:06 PM BST

My guess would be Belgrade 2026

Because at that point he'll probably be outside the worlds top 8 and wont be able to qualify for the Tour finals anyway

What also strikes me is that he won so relatively easy to get to that semi - then got smashed as we saw.

Doesn't say much for the 2nd layer of players below Djok does it?

Only alternative explanation is that carrying some injury reduced his play here - that's possible too.
Report Journeyman July 12, 2025 1:56 PM BST
It seems he's going to do the farewell tour.

At his post match press conference (source the Express) 'Hopefully it's not my last match on Centre Court. I'm not planning to finish my Wimbledon career today. I'm planning to come back definitely at least one more time'

His thinking may not be disimilar to Stu's point above ^ If he's on his own one man second tier in between the untouchable premier league main two and the 'conference reserves' standard rest of the tour then there is the argument that all it would take is a couple of injuries or dodgy curries and he'd have a chance.

I don't think it's about getting to 25 because that would mean he was taking the Margaret Court comparison seriously and I doubt that he does. I think it's about being one off the record for Wimbledon titles and Roger sitting pretty.
Report tobiasr July 12, 2025 9:56 PM BST
