This tournament doesn't get much attention because it clashes with Sydney, but several winners of this tournament in the past 10 years have had their careers take off after winning Hobart.
2009    Czech Republic Petra Kvitová    Czech Republic Iveta Benešová    7–5, 6–1
2010    Ukraine Alona Bondarenko    Israel Shahar Pe'er    6–2, 6–4
2011    Australia Jarmila Groth    United States Bethanie Mattek-Sands    6–4, 6–3
2012    Germany Mona Barthel    Belgium Yanina Wickmayer    6–1, 6–2
2013    Russia Elena Vesnina    Germany Mona Barthel    6–3, 6–4
2014    Spain Garbiñe Muguruza    Czech Republic Klára Zakopalová    6–4, 6–0
2015    United Kingdom Heather Watson    United States Madison Brengle    6–3, 6–4
2016    France Alizé Cornet    Canada Eugenie Bouchard    6–1, 6–2
2017    Belgium Elise Mertens    Romania Monica Niculescu    6–3, 6–1
2018    Belgium Elise Mertens (2)    Romania Mihaela Buzărnescu    6–1, 4–6, 6–3
2019    United States Sofia Kenin    Slovakia Anna Karolína Schmiedlová    6–3, 6–0

Wasn't sure whether to include Barthel or not, because she ended up being a journeywoman, but she was the next big thing in tennis in the first half of 2012 after pushing Vika, back when she was unstoppable, really close in some matches. Petra had shown some promise but winning Hobart as an 18 year old was her first title. It was also Garbine's 1st WTA title. Mertens went on to reach Aussie Open SF after winning Hobart back to back, the first one was her 1st WTA title, and Kenin is now having the best year of her career after starting the year by winning her maiden WTA title in Hobart.

And if Heather hadn't choked against Serena at Wimbledon that summer maybe her name would have been in bold too.
