Hi, i'm looking at a long term high value bet on Djokovic overtaking Federers record of grand slams, I think looking at the current competition, his age and form it's possible, Obviously injurys, form, new players etc etc make this quite a risky bet, i'd be interested in peoples thought as to 1 - whether they think it will happen and 2 - what odds would you expect on this. Any thoughts welcomed. Thanks.

Given the odds on this are lower than him winning every grand slam right now, I'd rather just back him to win individual grand slams (especially non-French ones). Even at a very rapid rate you are going to be waiting like 2 and a half years to collect on this if it wins, even if the price is value, given it's an odds on shot, I just think there are better things you could be doing with your money.

I wouldn't worry about new players at all. The only real thing stopping him doing this is injury. Djokovic has been incredibly resistant to injury in recent years, so you'd think the odds of injury are low, but there's always the chance.

Given I expect Djokovic to win at least 6 grand slams over the next 2 years unless he has any injury problems, he will be right on Federer's tail likely by the end of 2017.

It was mentioned that Federer hit a wall about Djokovic's age when it came to winning slams, but not sure how relevant that is. Federer still had to deal with a top level Nadal and a rising Djokovic.

both of them are in decline, Stan is there to cause him trouble but Stan can lose to about 10 players in draws anyway. Murray looks like he could suffer a Sharapova-like run against Serena in his matchup against Djokovic.

Kei is unlikely to be a long term danger. It would be nice if a fit Delpo could trouble him but that's probably just fantasy. Raonic, Dimitrov and the rest of that generation don't look like troubling him soon even if Raonic might making a few more SFs

gonna be at least 4-5 years I imagine before the 18-19 guys do anything worthwhile

Raonic is the danger imo

The only real thing stopping him doing this is injury.

Fitzdares could only off 4/5, no interest at those odds at all.

No, there really is only one thing stopping him and that is injury, the last thing the tennis authorities would do is bite the hand that feeds them, unlike teams sports, particularly football, there are very very few stars in the world of Tennis but Novak is one of them, blacking the sports image with such an exposé would set the sport back years but more to the point, would lose the sport untold income and credibility, it's the same reason why Usain Bolt is bullet proof.

Djokovic is in his prime and i cant see him going away from the top for at least a few more years. So i think he will catch up with Federer and even beat his record. There are only a few players that can even make a matchup for him if they play their best, other then that he seems light years ahead of everyone...times are very different if we go back more then a decade when a teenage Nadal was raping everyone on clay courts or nearly two decades ago when a teenage Safin was a powerhouse that was never seen before in the tennis world... there are some talented youngsters joining now but none of them seems to be a real tennis prodigy that could be a threat for a player like Djokovic any time soon...heck nobody is even a threat to an aging Federer at the moment, Djokovic does not have to be in the conversation yet...or perhaps they prodigies talent-wise but it really seems tennis has evolved to the point that every physical, conditional, mental, emotional, intellectual, experience, resilience etc. factor plays an integral part in the development phases for young players...this is a wholesome package which is impossible for a teenager to have, that is why the development process for professional players has lengthened considerably...Nalbandian could have had a diet that consisted of pizza and hamburgers and still be ranked nr.3 in the world just due to his natural talent but i dont think that would work these days...top players are now progressive superathletes and every step up the rankings you go, seemingly small gaps in quality make a huge difference on the court...there's a larger gap between djokovic and murray then between two players ranked 50 and 150.

it's interesting to watch the young guns ply their trade indoors on the quicker courts over bo3 against the second tier of players, where we see that they're quite able to mix it.

but move onto the clay or the medium slow to slow hard courts and the physicality is too much.

no-one young is going to break through to the very top level unless they are extremely physically precocious or try to play as aggressively as federer to a ridiculously high percentage.

the closest was dimitrov in madrid against djokovic but he had all the risk drilled out of him by rasheed. he aimed high and might have had a shot; rasheed taught him to aim low, and he still has days where he misses.
