Any favourites? Any player that most wouldnt know of, that you've found is reliable? I.e. serves out regularly, and avoids moments of muggery? Stats not needed, just anyone you've noticed. The more obscure, the better. Tell us!

Estrella. There's one. Big hairy balls and has no time for choking.

There's no real secret behind it. Usually it's the intelligent players who use their brain more then their arms and feet. Ljubicic and Stepanek for example were quite reliable players, rarely did they choke from a commanding position. Both were great tacticians and always made rational decisions.

drawn to the big servers in the mens, and the front runners in the womens.

i'd expect dellacqua and riske and vanderweghe to finish clinically if they've been in control all match.

4+ breaks in the third and needing to serve it out - not so much.

Vanderweghe's a big call. I had her down as one of the biggest head cases. I had a bad experience on her once which probably topped the scales. Stepanek's a good shout. Solid as ****.

without a doubt. but he has big confidence in his go-to weapon, the serve down the tee, which helps. As DStyle alluded to, big servers will usually ride it out because it's basically muscle memory that takes over, taking the actions away from the brain.

Me. Because I only start playing when 6-0 5-0 down. Otherwise I would say John Higgins. If he can play tennis, that is.

anyone worth mentioning will be a former world number "something high" otherwise he or she obiously wont be worth a shout because he or she either never really was good enough or never was ranked high enough. And he or she never was ranked high enough becase he or she probably never was good enoughGrin

The thread isn't about being good, it's about being mentally sound. Estrella, Kyrgios and Dustov have all been mentioned, none of them fit your criteria.

there is no existing criteria for this. This is not mathematics.

My point is that being 'mentally sound' is not the same as being 'good'. You can be a rubbish player and still be one of the most mentally sound players on tour.

Anyway, i dont think Dustov, Kyrgios and Estrella are good calls. I can explain why i dont think so. Kyrgios is a young and upcoming star, still very much a mistery however. I agree he has a strong mind but we should wait for him te peak and then start talking about his atributes. This topic only makes sense to discuss players who already were or currently are in their prime. Estrella won his first futures tournament at the age of 26 (which is in fact very late to win your first tournament at that level) and his first challenger at the age of 31. Obviously he was among the most experienced players (match-wise not stage-wise) in those tournaments. What does that tell you? matches = experience...I dont know much about his story or his personal life but to me the facts presented suggest that he was not quite a mental giant throughout his 20's, and it took a while for him to regroup and show the best of himself. And for the fact, the first futures final he has ever played in 2006, he lost to Ryan Sweeting 3-6 0-6. Sure he is mentaly stronger now but that came with years and numerous of matches. In his recent atp final he had very good chances to win in 2 sets against a weary and injured Feliciano Lopez who was clearly not moving well around the court because of his right thigh injury. Lopez was trying to shorten up the points as much as possible and somehow he managed to take the match to a decider. Then as it finally seemed Estrella had ran away with the match, he choked once again and really made it anyone's game. So for me he is simply not in that category. I dont think i have ever seen Dustov play, but he is 3-8 in atp challenger finals. Hardly impressive when things get tight and he gets close to winning a title, dont you think so?

safiulin looks to be solid against mugs for the future altho i think he is not that good as he is reckon to be but yes should be solid and big serve

krygios yes defo will be solid against lesser players but he will be top 20 sooner or later so shouldnt be taken to account.same most of young supertalents they will start to play consistently well when matured

from girls can say ostapienko is player who when she is leading and winning she does the job done quite impressively. same oceane she is mega tall and has big game is she is on song she wins. also kalinhina the same. big serve big groundies should be solid on wta standards . gavrilova can be also but the way more wozniacki is

Ana konjuh when she mature bit more mentally will be rock solid player and has great serve 1st and 2nd one but very young yet.she should stroll the ranks at some point if stay healthy so cant have her as not top20 player in future tho

in terms of solidnes i liked viky duval a lot but she is not back yet so will take time to build back form for her

This thread is not for pedants. I dont care for what stage they're at in their careers, where there were once ranked or whether they still play with Action Man, Barbie or ****g Ken.

Generally mentally sound players of today please :)
