Around 5% of matches end in retirement and almost all of those are players who have hurt themself somehow, played on, then quit when they were not going to win.

You missed the days when Murray retires on his birthday.

Based on my knowledge if a player retires he only get 50% of the check he's supposed to take. So you should take this into consideration.

If it's a first/second round match in a 250 tournament a player could retire even if he doesn't have a serious injury.

But if we're talking about a quarter/semi-final in a grand slam we're talking about serious money. How many matches have you seen with players playing in one leg and they didn't even thought about retiring.

For example Juao Souza is playing Djokovic right. If he loses this match he'll take a 90k check which is about 1/3 of his total career earnings.

However if he pulls out before completing the match he's only getting 45k. I'm pritty sure he won't retire even if he loses 6-0 6-0 6-0.
