But will they do anything about it. I doubt it. It's been said for years they are too slow, yet Indian Wells and Miami this year I think have got even slower than last year.

Report n88uk March 31, 2013 7:42 PM BST
It's ridiculous that really the clay courts are genuinely quicker than Indian Wells and Miami now.

Report n88uk March 31, 2013 7:52 PM BST
Yes the grass at Wimbledon has slowed down hugely. I believe in 2011 was it when Roland Garros used those very fast balls, they actually showed that Wimbledon was slower than Roland Garros. Wimbledon uses pretty much the slowest balls in existence is part of the reason for it being so slow.

I don't hate him at all

I'm just very disappointed with how he had developed, how mentally fragile he is, how he plays compared to the cavalier, imaginative stuff he played in his early days

I want him to 'click' mentally, to come on court bristling with intent and to have his opponents defeated before a ball is hit, like Federer did at his peak, to serve very well all the time, to step in and take the ball early, approach the net for put away vollies far more often when his opponent does a defensive retrieval shot and to raise his game above the mundane ball bashing and scrambling

I want him to take his chances, to not get broken back after breaking, to put matches away easily when leading by heer mental will and domination. How many times has he lost when he had match point, do you know? 18 times in his pro career. That is bollox

But I'm frustrated because he won't do any of that
Report the bairn April 1, 2013 1:25 AM BST
you're frustrated because you're a f-ckin arrs-hole. cheers.
Report AyersRock April 1, 2013 1:32 AM BST
It's true he is a slow starter and he has to work on that, but for the 18 match points he has had, can you list every match, I bet most were in his early career, and what are the stats for the other top 3 throughout their careers, lets see how they match up.
Although the %'s on his service game needs improving his return stats are v good

in 2013

murray is 3rd on the  'break points converted' list ahead of the other big 3
murray is joing 4th with nadal on return games won
murray is joint 3rd on 'Points won returning first serve'

Today's match had many breaks because Ferrer is the best returner in the game, murray probably actually returns more balls over the net, but ferrer is more clinical, it was not a great shock.

I honestly have no idea what you're talking about when it comes to mental fragility, that's an over exaggeration he's got a lot of bottle, like at last years aussie open final.
I think lendal has had a good effect on him, he no longer loses his rage on court half as much as he used to exuding negative energy plus he doesn't look up to he team as much for help, he can be better but this was a masters against ferrer, all he cares about are slams against the big three and if you look at his recent slam record - finalist, winner, finalist, quarters, finalist, semi, semi, semi, fianlist, it's not to shabby by anyone's standard.

most English people hate him because they think he is anti English and miserable dour scot, but anyone that follows tennis knows he is not like that and probably only tune in to tennis two weeks a a year when its fashionable, that whole Paraguayan shirt thing was an obvious joke.

By the way that cavalier attitude didn't win him slams in his early career
Report judorick April 1, 2013 1:59 AM BST
he lost 3 matches he had match point in after winning the USO in 2012
Report AyersRock April 1, 2013 2:04 AM BST
I take it that was to Janowicz in Paris where he tanked like all the other top players did in prep for London.

To Raonic in Tokyo - the very best server in the game

And to Djokovic

All on their serve no doubt.

You have a point though he needs to start matches better, that's his weakness.
Report judorick April 1, 2013 2:05 AM BST
if you look at those slam finals in detail he chucked at least one away and was very lucky to win in USO

Wimbledon he was a set up and had two break (set) points at the end of the second to go 2-0. Not only did he not take the set, he then managed to get broken from 30-0 to lose the set 7-5. And that was the match gone

Aus Open just gone was very similar

and even in the USO final he was  very lucky not to lose the second set from 4-0 up and go lucky to break at 6-5. Had he lost that set he would have lost that match too

He lost to Jankowicz, Niskikori and Raonic from match point up iirc. As I say mentally fragile. Compare with Nadal for example - hard as nails mentally
Report AyersRock April 1, 2013 2:30 AM BST
Yes he was very lucky to take 3 sets of the world number 1, and beat federer in 3 straight sets at the olympics, come on now.

Compare with Nadal for example - hard as nails mentally

yes the same nadal that lost 7 finals in a row to djokovic where he took the first set 3 times and lost the next two, it happens.

There are still some chinks for sure with Murrays mental side & I wish just occasionally he would throw in a gutsy 2nd serve with speed just for a change (reminds me of Henmans 2nd serves), but overall I think Murray has improved hugely mentally.  I never used to back him, now I do.
Report jin_kazz April 1, 2013 10:42 AM BST

think it could be a case of not getting enough rest between points, now that the 25 second tennis is being enforced. I can't find any other explanation for how a guy a like Ferrer, who are perhaps the fittest guy on tour, could barely stand up in the end.
As has been pointed out 2 hrs 45 min doesn't sound that long, especially when we consider the 5-6 hr battles in GS finals we've seen the past years, but getting the opportunity to rest between helps the body to recover and if players don't get that rest, we end up with situations like the one yesterday for longer matches with lots of long rallies.
Report jin_kazz April 1, 2013 1:30 PM BST
is this 1st 3-set match after they begin to use this rule?
Report caramba April 1, 2013 1:39 PM BST
No, but one of the more physical ones. In a match with shorter rallies, the rule probably doesn't make much difference, but in a match like yesterday I'd think it's more important for players to have more time to recover between points.
I'm not saying this is the case for sure since I don't really know, but I'm trying to find an explanation for what we saw yesterday. And it was both players who were completely exhausted. I've never seen Ferrer like this and Murray has played 4-5 hr long matches without being this tired.
Report jin_kazz April 1, 2013 1:45 PM BST
