This thread is not about whether it's right or wrong, but how smart it is? With Fed, Djoko and Nadal not there, it would have been a great opportunity for Murray to collect 1000 points. It would have been easier for him to collect 1000 pts here than to do it next week. And even if he would have won Paris Masters, he would still have a good chance to collect +500 points next week and thereby getting more than the 1500 pts a WTF win is worth over the two weeks. Or is it a sign of a great player that they care more about big titles than ranking points.

Look at all the players in Golf that have been World Number 1 without winning a Major . No one thinks of them as great players, or even as World Number 1 really |

You can put your Paris Bercy trophy on it, though to be honest it's as ugly a trophy as you'll ever see.
I don't think Murray should've dropped his intensity so much in that 3rd set. Surely becoming World No. 1 should be among his remaining goals of his career, why he'd throw so many (potential) points away I'll never know. |

I don't think the ATP gives out trophies for Year-End No.1s, but not sure. The WTA does.

edy, that Bercy trophy is so ugly I even forgot the argument that you can put that on the mantlepiece. tbh, I don't know about ATP year end no 1 trophy, I know WTA has it and assumed ATP did as well.

Ranking points are counted from 8 mandatory 1000 series. Paris is actually ninth for Murray because he withdrew from Madrid and rules say that he has to count that 0 from Madrid. I cant find anywhere how points are calculated when player is entered to all 9 1000 series events but it could be that this Paris event did not make any difference to Murrays point account anyway...

I don't think Murray or any of the top 4 really cares about the points so much. Unless you really want to be World Number 1 then yes. But other than that, 2nd or 4th it doest really matter. They will still play each other in any tournament they play anyway.
Murray some time admitted that he plays much better when he has a week off before a major tournament. The other thing is - money. I know they earn millions every year but still, they still do play for money. Obviously London pays better than Paris, you only have to win a match to get 130k. So by the time you reach semifinal you could already have 390k in 3 or 4 days where you would need to reach final in Paris to get 235k. So from Murray point of view - he had a long season, don't care much about points,all other main rivals not going to gain any point over him because they are out, a week off court will benefit him next week, money wise is also make sense to save energy. Why would he want to win in Paris ? That takes us back and think, why would you even have this or any other event on calendar just a week before London ? |

well how much money do you think a player could make if he, say, won the first set, went a break up in the second and then tanked? And save himself for London at the same time?

You simply take the 8 highest point scoring tournaments the player achieved, considering he hasn't won a masters all year, and had to defend a a qf from 2011, he had motivation, but not enough, why exert yourself when London is alot more prestigous. stupid scheduling. |

Yes it appears that you are right bb. MC is voluntary and if chosen to play it will be counted as one of the four 500 series....so yes points from paris were there to be taken.
