Simple. All sports should provide an open list of any drugs ban. No failed test should ever be kept silent.
Report lurka • September 4, 2012 2:03 AM BST
that's right DStyle. the bottom line is that the testing regime is easy to get around and the authorities do not want a djok or nadal testing positive. it would ruin the rep and cost millions in sponsorship. So it is even less likely that you'll find out about a doper
Report DStyle • September 4, 2012 2:05 AM BST
if i had a gun to my head and had to pick the most likely candidate in the top 10, it would be the serb.

there are too many readily provided explanations: the gluten free diet; the weird altitude training pod.

errani and ferrer have links to dr. del moral (armstrong/US Postal TDF Doctor) and the tennis val acedemy. She has had an uncanny rise the last year after years or mediocrity. Sharapova apparently has gone there to practice for a month before the FO the last couple of years

Indeed. Cycling might have more failed tests but I'll hazard a very strong guess, you won't find a more tested sport in the world. But that is because it had a problem in the first place.

i think there is a lot of hipocrisy going on in cycling doping controls
Report lurka • September 4, 2012 2:12 AM BST

no way in hell could djokovic out of the blue have a year like last year just by changing something minor in his diet, its just laughable to suggest that there was no foul play at work. personally i think they ought ot just let them take what they like and not even bother testing. not just in tennis but in all sports.

what are you saying? more people sprint in jamaica compared to other countries?

Report smb360 • September 4, 2012 2:38 AM BST
Hans - I can't answer those questions. Didn't know Blake had been banned.

None of that changes what I said though, don't underestimate the power of our genes. But environmental variation is also in the mix too, and perhaps the environmental factors - the training, picking up athletes at an early age, nutrition (from a very young age - bringing poverty levels of the country into play), Jamaican sports science, physio, coaches, a culture of taking athletics seriously - are now in place when perhaps they weren't before.

If the environment is right, then the genes can shine. And if you've already got a general set of genes that give you the best starting point of any nationality, then all it takes is some lucky mutations (which are entirely normal) and you can create a genetic freak (for sprinting purposes) like Usain Bolt.
Report Darlo Bantam • September 4, 2012 2:39 AM BST
Blake was banned for three months bizarrely for a legal drug. It was only put on the banned list after he and other Jamaicans were found to have taken it. Yes, it was a steroid.

There is always an excuse for these extraordinary performances, there has to be to deflect attention. Genetic make-up, gluten-free diet, revolutionary training regime etc. So none of that is out of the ordinary.

When you have Marion Jones drug chemist say that drugs are the difference between 10 and 9.7s in the men's 100m, when Carl Lewis tested positive in the 80s, you should realise that it is far more likely than not that in each case a sub 10s 100m is run, the athlete was on PEDs. It has been going on for 25+ years in athletics.
