Any thoughts on who will win the match (May 11, 2012)?
• Li is ranked #8. Azarenka is #1.
• Li is 30 years old. Azarenka is 22.
• Li is 172 cm tall. Azarenka is 183 cm.
• Li won the French Open (clay) in 2011 and is probably preparing to defend that title.
Azarenka won the Australian Open (hardcourt) in 2012 and is probably best on that surface?
• Li was recently beaten by Kerber (world #19), Sharapova (#2) and Radwanska (#4).
Azarenka was recently beaten by Bartoli (#7) and Sharapova (#2).
• When Azarenka lost the final of her previous tournament (Stuttgart Open) to Sharapova, there was talk of Azarenka having a wrist injury.
• Both Li and Azarenka has played three matches each in the current tournament (Madrid Open). Neither one has lost a set. Azarenka has however had two tie-break sets (vs #28 Kuznetsova and #117 Hlavackova).
Personally I have bet on Azarenka at odds around 1.5 since I think she is basically the better player of the two. But might Li have a surprise win if she can play aggressively without too many unforced errors?

In Madrid Open 2011 (last year) Li reached the semifinal, and lost there to then #18 Kvitova.
Azarenka reached the final and lost there to Kvitova. In Madrid Open 2012, both probably want to reach at least as far as they did in 2011. The match Azarenka vs Li tomorrow (May 11, 2012) is one of the four quarter finals of Madrid Open 2012. |

Li is a "on and off" player, last match she stayed "on" , giving Kerber no chance. Azarenka has not been playing too good the last matches, so this could be real tight.

Ok. I saw the match Li vs Kerber in March 2012 (om hardcourt in Indian Wells tournament), and Li didn't really seem to be in form in that match and made quite a lot of unforced errors when pressured by Kerber who had a pretty easy win that time (6-4, 6-2). But now I see that Li played Kerber in the third of her three matches so far in this tournament (Madrid Open), and this time Li won (7-5, 6-4). So the impression is that Li is in form now, while Azarenka is maybe not playing at 100%. As mentioned Azarenka lost the final in her previous tournament (Stuttgart Open) to Sharapova who won that match easily (6-1, 6-4). And I read that Azarenka's second match in this tournament was not all that easy vs #117 Hlavackova: http://blogs.tennis.com/racquet_reaction/2012/05/madrid-azarenka-d-hlavackova.html For example it says there that Azarenka might well have lost the second set in that match, but won it in a tie-break. However I felt it was a good sign that Azarenka beat #15 Azarenka (6-4, 6-4) in Aza's third match in this tournament. That showed that Aza seems to be in pretty good form after all? |

Previous encounters (in 2011 and 2012)
2011 January: Australian Open (4th round), Li won 6-3, 6-3 May: French Open (quarter finals), Li won 7-5, 6-2 October: WTA Championships (1st round), Azarenka won 6-2, 6-2 2012 January: Sydney (final), Azarenka won 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 So if you look at 2011 and 2012 Azaranka and Li have met four times and won two matches each. However, Azarenka won the last two matches which probably is a sign that she has matured and become a better player. |

My bet will be: Lay Azarenka 2-0, I think it might be 3 setter or Li will win.:)

Ok. The current set odds are the following: Azarenka 2-0: 2.12 Azarenka 2-1: 4.4 Li 2-0: 6.2 Li 2-1: 5.7 So the market still seems to think that Azarenka 2-0 is the most likely outcome of the match. The match odds are the following: Azarenka to win: 1.46 Li to win 3.15 I.e. the market believes Azarenka is the favourite to win the match. |

its a mug market. this match is a coinflip. li is f*cking great on clay and was strong vs. kerber. if she doesnt spray too many UEs she will win this. 3.25 is incredible value. |

I agree with jjjjj. Li was great with Kerber. A little devil.:) My only concern is about her mental condition in hard situations.

li won french open couple of years back + aza is not all that on clay. odds prematch were too short for aza.
