a well known ruse with handicap horses is to deliberately run a horse slowly so it drops in the handicap, gets a light weight, and then when everything looks good ie ground conditions, strength of oppo, it's sent out to run for real. this isn;t considered cheating, but is actually admired as part of the game! the punters on here who cry fix all the time would have fits doing the horses.

how do you know they dont do the horse racing?
Report edy April 26, 2012 10:37 PM BST
and you brits don't cry foul over that tactic in public? I thought you would be all for fair play in everything, every sport. In football it always seems like you condemn someone who dives (Drogba anyone? Wasn't he even booed by Chelsea supporters for doing it?) compared to some other cultures who praise it as clever and as you just said with the horses...part of the game.
Report good value losers April 26, 2012 10:42 PM BST
they dress it up by saying in prev races the horse wasn't right, or the ground wasn't right. and if the slow running is too blatant they might give the jockey a token ban for a week.
Report good value losers April 26, 2012 10:44 PM BST
and to be fiar, it's a bit like tennis players. horses aren't machines and a horse's form will fluctuate over the season the same way a tennis player's will. you can plot this quite easily.
Report edy April 26, 2012 10:53 PM BST
true.

One last question: These races, they are on like every day, right? Are the stands typically filled? Or is that just the big races that the Queen visits too?

I was once pretty darn close to winning a weekend super special VIP exclusive trip to one those (Ascot?...not sure) in a betfair competition a while back. I think I would've skipped the race stuff completely and just visited London. Plain

I don't quite know....is there anybody who ever watches horse racing without having a bet? Simply as a sport because it's cool?

racing at least 2 venues every day, usually more. stands aren't always bursting, but most meetings are quite well attended, surprisingly so imo

I have to say, betting on the tennis for most of January on Bet563 seemed much safer - I didn't have to concern myself with the risk of a player retiring and so was able to bet larger amounts.
Report Srichaphan or Ancic? January 31, 2013 4:52 PM GMT
which makes me think that that Betfair would gain, not lose money, if they voided all bets on matches won by retirement as people would stake more.

betfair should be able to void all bets after the player announces retirement, it should be clear from the market when this happens. Don't have an issue with losing money on a player who retires but it is massively unfair to allow the fastest to hoover money after retirement has been announced.

you can also win when a player (opponent) retires, so i don't mind it. Same for everybody. Hoovering is the problem. Worst i've ever seen is Ons Jabeur in Baku this year, she was  6-3, 4-1 up at 1.01/1.02 and retired. there was talk of a fake injury as she didn't want to play an Israeli (Peer) in the next round.
Report Wallflower November 1, 2013 6:42 PM GMT
No.  Like the rule. As someone says - same for everyone. At least you're not wasting your time for 2 hours when there is a retirement in the final set.
Report aaronh November 2, 2013 12:39 AM GMT
assuming a lot of people are traders here, why would you want all your hard work ruled out by a void?

betfair are not going to void an entire market and lose all their commissions. It is ridiculous to suggest that betfair do this.

Report __JC_GT__ February 21, 2014 10:28 AM GMT
Lmao don't you guys get it?

With the retirement rule the way it is it means that every time 1 set of any match is completely Betfair GET commission.

Why would they want to change it?

No chance! Sure I totally agree that it's arguably even unethical of them.

But hey, they're a business after all and out to make money.
Report DStyle February 21, 2014 10:54 AM GMT
it should be one ball.

with the advent of in play betting and the myriad ways a tennis player could contrive the result, the original justification for voiding if the first set isn't completed seems redundant.

i'd be interested to know what difference this would make to any arbers, i don't they have the same sway as the big lot of the cricket who got the match tied rule changed.
Report caramba February 21, 2014 12:29 PM GMT
Arbers will have different methods and therefore different preferences, but I would have to reduce my turnover a bit if they changed to one ball since the majority of books I use are either one set or void.
