Race notes
Race 2
Borna Coin looks to be the most reliable trapper and likeliest winner. Not much value to be had. Westmead Melanie is certainly promising, but is hit and miss at the traps. Skywalker Satin flew out of the traps on 20 Oct, but checked up at the 3rd bend last time and that is a concern.
Race 3
William Hill classic winner Target Classic has the best form and comes out best on the ratings. If the going is to be believed (nah), Tudor Prince will bolt up. Tudor Prince reached the final of the Keith Swain Manchester Puppy Cup. On the negative side, he was KO'd in the final and smashed up last time. Tudor Prince seems also to be prone to stumbling at the start, so Target Classic is a confident choice, with the better draw.
Race 4
This one looks pretty open and it may be best to side with competition form. '09 Laurels finalist Sniper Petra and Pboro puppy Derby finalist Little Sensation are two to consider. Droopys Hester takes time to get going and may get too far adrift early.
Race 5
Lily Mayday did the Drumbo Park sprint clock and could represent value here at Hill's 8/1. (or perhaps better on the machine later) Perhaps their odds compiler could not be bothered to look up the Irish form. '09 Keith Swain Manchester Puppy Cup winner Target Brett has just about the best English form, but does return from a short lay off. Castlehill Nani is another with decent sprint form, but is another to be returning from a break.
Race 6
Irish puppy Oaks winner Faypoint Lauren bolted up in the heats, has obvious claims, and is priced accordingly. This may be a bit more open than the prices suggest and I would not be taking too short a price here, as she no longer is housed out wide. Elwick Blitz won her heat well, but has plenty to find on the clock. Similar comments apply to Rebellious Queen. Sunoak Crystal has been running below her best for some time now. Little Flame showed plenty of pace and looks extremely overpriced to my eyes. Well worth a few shillings, I'd say.
Great North run Final
Droopys Arshavin was the most impressive heat winner. He came right away from his rivals and looks well drawn. Hurleys Hero rode a first bend bump and ran well to catch Anfi Gem in his heat. Anfi Gem holds a verdict over Hurleys Hero from an earlier run, but Hurleys Hero suffered two lots of trouble in that race and should gain his revenge here. Hurleys Hero has changed his style of running. He used to bang out and destroy them, but he now seems to take time to get going. Droopys Arshavin looks the safest option.

Littermates Westmead Melanie and Westmead Maldini top the table this week with decent ratings of 105. Both are by the prolific dam Mega Delight. Melanie has won 2 opens and a maiden from 20 starts. Maldini has won 5 opens from 15 starts. Blonde Ross has a single open win, a Wimbledon puppy Derby heat. Blonde Ross comes from a promising litter that includes the decent Blonde Snapper. Booked In won a maiden at Hove, recording a fair rating of 99. Booked In’s dam is Rough Venture, who’s thrown a high percentage of open racers, including Blonde Alonso and Rough Laura.

The William hill Great North Run has attracted a really good entry. Droopys Arshavin set the standard in the comp, when recording a very decent 112 rating. He's now recorded 15 open wins from 40 starts. His dam has thrown some excellent Greyhounds, including Lorrys Options, Bubbly Totti, Bubbly Eagle and countless open race winners. Hurleys Hero was not far behind and recently did the clock over C & D. The final will be held on Sky's card Wed 10 Nov.

Greyhound of the year elect Jimmy Lollie, burned up the track at Hove, recording a scorching rating of 123. He's a fantastic Greyhound, who's holding his form very well, considering he's now had 102 races. I guess sprinters should be able to go on a bit longer than those who run over longer trips. Ladbrokes Gold cup winner, Bucks Yahoo, can also strut his stuff over the sprints and is pretty lightly raced for a Nov 2007 Greyhound. Slick Citi is another top sprinter, who may be looking forward to the retirement of the champ. The sprinting division has been really good over the last year or two, with so many decent sprinters around at the same time. A key part of a  Greyhound night is variety. Sprints, 4 bends, 6 & 8 bends and hurdles too make for a great night out.

Following the departure of Peter Meldrum from the Racing Post, Greyhound racing fans have been deprived of some quality Open race ratings.

Until xmas, I shall be tabulating Open performances of the week for sprinters, standard(4 bends),standard puppies (4 bends), stayers and maybe marathons.
I will also be tabulating "Top Of The Pups". This will be the best performances of Greyhounds recently imported from Ireland.

The ratings are produced in an Access database. One of my databases automatically imports all the UK form.
I determined standard times for every track and distance combination. I manually set a going allowance for every single open race. I devised an equation to calculate a rating for each calculated time. One click of a button in one of my databases calculates ratings for all Greyhounds runs from the last year in less than a minute. The rating shown represents the best run within ca. 15% of today's distance from their last four runs. Four points on the ratings equals one length over all distances. I consider a proper open race rating to be 100 upwards. A rating over 115 is top class.
