A disabled, partially sighted person has never won spoty as far as im aware. Often shortlisted and nearly always overlooked by the voters coz they don't play sport at the elite level. Nearly all have remarkable back stories of overcoming there handicaps life has thrown at them and the tough journey of competing at the highest level they possibly can. Yet the voters just don't care, they are not competing at the highest elite level of there chosen sport, its as simple as that, where winning spoty is concerned. That's what the stats say anyway.
This of course has nothing to do with Hannah, she doesn't fall into either category but she's probably the closest thing that's ever been in contention.

Hannah has said she still suffers slightly from strabismus, even after multiple surgeries in childhood.

Strabismus (eye misalignment) can cause:

Difficulty with depth perception
Eye strain
Double vision (in some cases)

Hannah has acknowledged that she still deals with it to some degree, which is a remarkable aspect of her journey. Especially as a goalkeeper, a position requiring elite-level visual coordination.

Now does the BBC elevate Hannah and push a narrative that gives hopes to all these kids who do have conditions that will make it hard for them to break into and play elite level sports. Maybe even achieving there dreams as well by winning major competitions.

It appears to me the BBC have a real chance to do some good here, the ball is in their court !!

Hannah Hampton key moments during Euro 2025

verses Netherlands
Her distribution was exceptional she played the pass that unlocked the Dutch press, leading to Lauren James's goal. UEFA praised her 'extraordinary' ball distribution from the back.

Verses Sweden
Hampton was player of the match, she made crucial saves during normal play. Played on despite a bloody nose and then saved two pens in the shootout.

Verses Italy
She delivered a vital double save in the 86th minute, helping keep England in contention.

Verses Spain
Player of the match in the final. She delivered a tournament defining performance, kept England in the game with multiple crucial stops during the match. Hannah also delivered key passes that helped build England's attacking moves, then in the shootout saved another two pens.

Hannah emerged as England's most consistent performer in the competition, stepping into the spotlight under immense pressure and delivering across the board. From her sharp passing in group play to heroic shot stopping in the kockout rounds, her performances were pivotal to England's back to back European triumph.

Hannah played every single minute of the tournament and achieved two player of the match awards from UEFA, one in the quater final and one in the final.

Hannah's domestic season with Chelsea, where she played every single minute and the team won the domestic treble, the super league, FA cup and League cup. Remarkably not losing a single game, they achieved an invincible domestic treble.

Chelsea became the 1st team to record an invincible season in a 22 game season W19 D3 The points ratio of 2.73 was the highest ever.

She had a save rate of 79% (49 saves from 62 shots)

Individually she shared the WSL Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets (13)

Hannah's consistency and elite performances were critical to Chelsea's historic undefeated season and treble triumph

I'll repeat what i said on the main thread here

Hannah is by far the better role model, she has already gone out of her way to see a para lioness who was also told she would never play her beloved sport. just like Hannah got told, she did this after reading about her story and arranged a meeting at a local BBC radio station. She wanted to lift this girls spirits up.
We've already had a sweary lioness winner in Earps, im not sure we need another just two years later. Especially one who does it outside Buckingham Palace !!

Both lioness's Chloe and Hannah have backstory's with the former fighting depression around the start of the year but it just doesn't compare to Hannah competing at the highest level both domestically and internationally and coming away with every trophy in the process and not missing a single minute in any competition.

Hannah also lost her Grandad two days before the Euro's started, she shared a very touching tribute to him on her Instagram page after the team won in the final.

Its hard to think of a more deserving winner in recent times, Hannah for SPOTY Love

I'm a lot more down with this selection, that I was with your Luke (v Keely) one last year, so gl.

It will be a tough battle I think with Chloe to beat though. I haven't played it either way, just yet, will wait till nearer the time to tie up money and make any decision on it.

She has a worthy storyline and comparable achievement levels for this year, so it's a good start. The only problem is that she is facing a clear potential 'chosen one' story in Chloe.

Yashine Trophy (women): Introduced in 2025, this is awarded to the best goal keeper in the world. Not even Earps has one of these, whoever wins will go down in history as the 1st woman keeper in the world to win it. Hannah is one of 5 shortlisted, she is also the only keeper of the 5 in total, that has been shortlisted for the main award. The Ballon D'or, where there are 29 outfield players and Hannah up for the award.
Can't see her not winning the goalie award, as she's the only one shortlisted for the main award.

If a goalkeeper is nominated it shows they're considered among the top 30 female players in the world, across all positions. Its rare and prestigious moment as goalkeepers are less often nominated than forwards or midfielders.

Chloe is also nominated for the main award but its wise to note when Mary Earps was nominated in 2023 she finished in 5th place out of 30, the highest ever for a goalkeeper in the history of the award.
This was before the yashine trophy existed, its fair to say in its inaugural year its highly likely the goalie will finish fairly high in the main award.
As its decided by 100+ journalists from around the world voting on a points system i think there is a good chance Hannah finishes above Chloe in the final rankings as her heroics in the final was recognised by UEFA, its only the British media going banana's over Chloe scoring the winning penalty.

Anyway, bottom line Hannah is odds on to walk to away with an award...whereas chloe is long odds against.

Just to put a bit of context into why Hannah should finish above Chloe in the final ranking's for the Ballon D'or and maybe match Earps record breaking 5th place or even finish higher, if the journo's do there job properly that is....here is why she should.

Aside from the fact that Earps didn't collect a single piece of silverware that season and Hannah has picked up 3 domestically in a record breaking invincible season consisting of 22 league matches, which is the most ever played. She also picked up an international title at the EURO's, and was named player of the match.

Ok im just repeating what i said on the other thread but here's the clincher if the journo's do there job, this is why she deserves a very high ranking. Hannah saved two penalty's in the final shootout, one to the left, one to the right but the really important thing is who took those penalty's and why it matters a lot.

Mariona Caldentey took the 2nd pen which Hannah saved, the player who gave Spain the lead in the 25th minute of normal time. Caldentey is an absolute certainty to make the top 5 of this years Ballon D'Or, more like top 3 and has a very good chance of claiming the award.

Aitana Bonmati took the 3rd pen which Hannah saved, this player is the current Ballon D'Or winner and just like her compatriot she two is a total certainty for top 5, top 3 probable and has a strong chance of winning the award for the 3rd straight year.

So not only did Hannah save two pens from 2 of the worlds best players, she also saved 2 of the 1st 3 pens taken..thus putting the fear of god into the 4th pen taker, who just watched two saved from arguably her teams two best players...meaning she struck hers wide of the post.
4 pens taken, one goal scored !!

This has been overlooked imo by the hop and thwack of Chloe scoring the winning pen, take away the excited crowd and let the professionals do there job. They should clearly see what Hannah done was pretty dam incredible.

Come September the 22nd there is a very high probability Hannah would of saved the pen in a final of a major competition from the current Ballon D'Or winner, and the other pen from someone ranked very highly. This to help secure the win for England.

Too put this into further context, here is the top 6 from the 2024 Ballon D'Or men's ranking which makes it a littler easier to grasp for any Joey Barton's tuning in to my ravings. What Hannah accomplished in that shootout was nothing short of brilliance on every level.

2 V Junior
3 J Bellingham
4 D Carvajal
5 E Haland
6 K Mbappe

lol Not enough to stop the nom but she's probably skating on thin ice, her backers wouldn't want to see any more negative press. Her price is still a massive overreaction and will correct from 22nd September.
Scoring the winning pen, being a forward (rather than a goalie) being far more well known down to the 2022 success is naturally why the market dived bombed towards her rather than Hannah. Which is fine, it gives punters the chance to get real value on a live contender.

One thing fav backers need to take into consideration is, there is not a chance in hell a 'super sub' will win the Ballon D'Or over a player who's started most games, clocked up more mins, scored more goals, assisted more goals and received less yellows cards than Chloe (who had the most of the 30 nominee's) and my guess is, as the rating's come in all those facts contribute to low scores and her most likely finishing outside of the top 5.

There is a real chance Hannah finishes above her in the main award if logic plays a part, with Earps finishing so high without winning anything that year. Especially as she played every minute of every match. Regardless of that outcome, Chloe will not be making any headlines. Whereas its extremely hard not to see Hannah winning the inaugural best goalie in the world award at the Ballon ceremony, where she will be most certainly be splashed across many front and back pages...the spotlight all on her with media rushing once again to interview her.

The exposure she gets from this probably still won't be enough to thrust Hannah above Chloe in the public's eyes, so i fully expect Chloe to remain fav but as SPOTY approaches its not the public who dish out the end of year awards. Professional journalists as well as professional sports people do, who should analyse the finer details of the sporting year and make the final decisions.

Lets look at those finer details and any backstory's that often make all the difference as it did with helping Keely win the SJA award which has a massive impact on the spoty panel deciding who makes the list. Example:

The golden glory transpires beyond Hodgkinson’s athletic ability – having lost 95% of her hearing in one ear aged 12, the gold medallist is the perfect role model for young people across the world.

Having overcome hearing loss, disappointment and heartbreak before going on to win Olympic gold, it is clear that Hodgkinson should undoubtedly win the SJA Sportswoman of the Year 2024.

Take particular notice to the keyword 'heartbreak'

The case for Chloe Kelly

Having fallen out of favour with Man City, she was loaned out to Arsenal and fully joined them in January this year. Around this time she did suffer with depression.
Arsenal did go onto win the champions league with Chloe's help, her overall impact though was quite minimal having only played 3 matches and not featuring in the earlier group stages of the tournament her best appearance was the 2nd quarter final where she set up 2 of the 3 goals v Madrid, that certainly helped the team win the tie 3-2 over the two legs.
She was pretty vacant in the semi finals though, she started the 2nd leg and was subbed off and given the lowest rating on flashscores for a starter for that match.
In the final she started and was subbed off after receiving a yellow card, again making no goal contributions just like both games in the semi's.
Over the 5 games she didn't get 90mins in any of them, either being subbed on or off. She basically had one major impact for 1 match of the whole tournament.

Its pretty fair to say her winning SPOTY is all about two weeks over the summer where her impacts in the quarters, semi's and final are well publicised, where she came off the bench and helped in each match.
In the quarters, she set up the 1st goal and scored her pen in the shootout
In the semi's she missed the pen in the 119th minute but managed to get to the rebound quickly enough to tap it into the net
In the final she set up the equaliser and scored the winning pen

With no real backstory a Chloe VT would pretty much boil down to just 4 games, having made no impact at all in Englands group stage of the tournament. I guess as a filler they'd mention her scoring the winning goal when we won in 2022, her being player of the match in the semi's and having a Ballon D'Or nomination.

Is that enough verses Hannah's finer details that have already been mentioned above, and on the other thread. Which will most likely now include a Ballon best goalie award, and hopefully a higher placing than Chloe in the main award.

Do the professionals bow to public pressure and gift the forward all the glory, recognition and attention or do they do there job properly and give to the most deserving ?

Oh the keyword 'heartbreak' attaches itself to Hannah's two part backstory, that of losing her grandad two days before the Euro's started and having undergone many operations as a toddler on her eyesight. Which still affects her to this day.

SPOTY will also not mention Hannah's eye issues as a child i suspect, just like they did not mention Keely's deafness as a child in her VT. Hannah's VT will mostly consist of the chelsea invincible domestic treble, the euro's and her winning the Ballon D'or. With her playing footie as a kid, which is the norm for most VT's these days. As seen with Keely and Luke running and chucking darts.

Tbh what's in the VT is not the backers main priority coz if we make the list she will win easily as long as she's the only lioness ofc.
Its making the list which matters the most and thats where the SJA comes in, whoever wins this generally has a 95%++ chance of making the SPOTY list. Being awarded Sports Woman of the year by the countries top sporting journalists is the main go to for the SPOTY panel who include similar people, including ex professional sports stars.

The article for each nomination is written by one of the journalists with the added edge they are a massive fan of said person they are putting the case forward for. This is where the finer details will be come into it, the stuff the SPOTY VT will leave out will be most certainly one of the main angles for the SJA write up. As it was for Keely last year.
So things like Hannah losing her grandad two days before the euro's, her ongoing eye issues and being told she'd never play professional sport as a kid and the pressure of taking over from earps just before the tournament will make up half the SJA write up or it dam well should if the fan journalist does a good job. The other half will consist of what will be her SPOTY VT.

So lets not worry about whats in SPOTY, im far more concerned about how her SJA case is put forward to the people who decide sports woman of the year.
By:
armagnac
When: 14 Aug 25 12:44
This is exactly what i'm talking about, i doubt any of this will make the SPOTY VT....small possibility a mention of her Grandad, if not in the VT. Most certainly when she wins the award.

Bottom line is, all of this should be included in her SJA write up. If past protocol is administered

England goalkeeper and Lionesses legend Hannah Hampton joins Nuala McGovern on Woman's Hour fresh from winning the UEFA European Women's Championship. Born with a serious eye condition, doctors told her she should never play football. She came into the recent Euros with questions over her ability to fill the gloves of recently retired Mary Earps. To add to that, she revealed her grandfather had died just days before the biggest tournament of her life began earlier this summer. Despite this, Hannah had an extraordinary tournament, particularly in those agonising penalty shootouts. She joins Nuala McGovern to chat all about it.

regarding water bottle gate, she appeared on Lorraine the other morning where this was brought up. It was a very hard watch and she did well not to get upset. She is regretting saying anything coz she is now getting hate messages put up on her grandad's tribute post.
In her head she has gone from hero to zero and is being a little hard on herself, over a jokey comment. Which has produced marmite responses, i'd probably say its 80% positive in her favour, with the wokesters jumping on the bandwagon giving her grief.

I'm certain we've not heard the last from this yet, she appears to have a very good agent getting her a lot of media work. So i am expecting some sought of statement about this soon either via another interview or a SM post.

Hannah is very relatable and comes across extremely well in her media appearances (Littler take note) were currently not seeing Chloe make as much effort as Hannah is, or her agent is not as good. Maybe she's keeping a low profile coz she can't control that gob of hers LaughLaugh

We all know who deserves it more, has the better backstory, who the better role model is and the most presentable on tv is.

Going in the wrong direction not that pleasing, Ballon results soon may reignite Hannah a bit. Depending on how far she gets up the main rankings.
Still can't see Chloe getting above Hannah but we've recently had the England player of the year public vote, which may explain certain market moves. Also i still think there is a good chance both make the shortlist, which only helps Chloe.
One can only hope, Hannah betters Chloe at the Ballon and somehow Chloe wasn't voted England player of the year. Massive case for Lucy Bronze for that imo.
Time will tell.........
