Back Alfie, cover bet on KJT

British wheelchair tennis star Alfie Hewett has been shortlisted as one of six athletes up for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2023.

Hewett’s nomination comes in recognition of an incredible 2023 campaign that has seen him finish the year as world No.1 in singles and doubles, win five Grand Slam titles, reach the final of all four major singles draws, lift the Masters singles and doubles trophies, and become ITF World Champion for the first time in his career.

In addition to the 26-year-old’s achievements on the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour this year, Hewett also led the Lexus Great Britain team to glory at the World Team Cup, where he went undefeated across all the Brits’ ties.

Alfie Hewett and Christine Truman Janes are set to be recognised by the British Tennis Journalists' Association (BTJA) with awards for their achievements and services to the sport.

26-year-old Hewett has been named the British Tennis Journalists' Association Player of the Year for 2023 in recognition of a stellar season that saw him finish as the world No.1 in both wheelchair singles and doubles.

Hewett is the first wheelchair tennis star to receive the award after a season that saw him win five Grand Slam titles (Singles: Australian Open & US Open; Doubles: Australian Open, Roland Garros & Wimbledon) as well as the Masters titles in November.

The award was decided by a ballot of BTJA members. Previous winners of the award include Andy Murray, Emma Raducanu and Virginia Wade.

"2023 has been really special," Hewett said. "To finish the year as world No 1 in both singles and doubles has been a huge goal of mine from the outset of my career and I so appreciate the support along the way to make this happen.

"In particular I feel we have again seen continued progression and amazing exposure for the sport of wheelchair tennis. I’m ever grateful to all parties including the British tennis journalists who have backed us and given us a platform to chat about this amazing sport. I only hope for this to continue and continue to grow. Thank you kindly for this award. Bring on 2024."

Another plus for KJT is probably a decent regional vote, in a likely low voter turnout year and as far as Hewett goes, the para vote is fairly strong historically, and he has pass me the Kleenex eyes.

They have ruined the programme without doubt. Earps, Broad then KJT was almost pre determined before the show with the outside chance of Alfie rallying like a king on the night. I don't think he was even that close to KJT despite her being on first. Would be good to see the votes.

Another thing the beeb have been awful at - why anyone would bother to vote when they give 0 information afterwards, beggars belief to me.

It's turned into a daily magazine show for sport. Essentially another This Morning, Lorraine or Lose Women. So it's no surprise if someone they would gush over should win it. I guess Mo was the initial pointer to that, never got anywhere through his amazing achievements, but wins due to his kids playing up, humanising him. And that's not anti women before the white knights pop up, it just reflects the direction that the bbc want their interpretation of 'sport' to go in. Much like the rest of their modern day output.

Cultural as well, isn't it. I grew up knowing boxers as household names. My family doing their absolute nut when barry mcguigan won. Millions of people watching Davis / Taylor into the early hours. The Derby had enormous audiences on a weekday. We've slowly been weened off sport essentially, just as we have comedy. Only football remains central, but that is being chipped away too, putting in on a minor channel.

There's lots of factors at play, not that I can pinpoint them all! That are working towards making the working man's life rather insipid. The obliteration of sport is certainly one of them, and the hollowing out of spoty is a reflection of that.

Fully explained. Live sport used to be very scarce on tv. It's why the likes of McGuigan, Eubank and Benn were so huge. Millions used to tune in to watch Harvey Smith jump a few fences. Now live sport is everywhere. If you are willing to pay

There's plenty of sporting heroines to choose from. Not about that is it. I genuinely know nothing of the detail, but what I heard in passing is that Earps became a big name over some nonsense about replica shirts. I have no idea if that's why she was a deserved winner. It's not like men's sport is great, and women's sport is pants. In my view they broadly have a different appeal, and attract a different audience. And the audience probably overlaps with the people that would still watch spoty.

I could liken it to cinema. You could have two amazing films, both could win an oscar. But appeal to two totally different audiences.

Women's tennis is a great sport, competitive and with a real history.

Football and cricket in the women's game is nothing in comparison - I personally think it's more about that sort of heritage question, as the modern versions are pretended to be worthy well established competitions, when they basically are not.

A historical blip though really as a sport?

The 'well established' issue is also more than just about history - it's about comparing minority sport (the women's) to majority sport (the men's).

It's like judging a winner of a village competition is as good as someone who competes or wins in an international. Like I say, I rate women's sports where the field is very strong e.g. Tennis.

Earps won because she's the best female goalkeeper in the world

This may well be true, I have no idea. Or how notable it is. I can absolutely guarantee however that less than 10% of the voting audience for her have any thorough knowledge of the rather niche world of global female footballing goalkeepers, and would most likely struggle to even name another one outside of Britain.

The debate about what it should take/deserve to win spoty has always been endless, even what the phrase 'sports personality' is intended to mean. I don't actually care myself, there's a public vote and someone wins, it was up to me to judge who might that be before it became obvious. It has become a rather niche event in of itself anyway. My observations are mostly around the betting, and my involvement. What used to be another annual specials money spinner, I don't play any more.

The way I see it, the rules of engagement have shifted away from what I am quite good at. We may well see another Ben Stokes Or Emma type achievement that meant they could not be overtaken by a narrative. If we're honest, if things had played out exactly the same in the sporting world in 2011 instead of this year, I doubt Earps would have been in the top half of the final 10. I doubt, outside of friends and family of the players, too many other people even knew that a female football world cup was taking place, never mind determining that a participant was the best sporting performer our country had that year. I'm not even trying to claim it is better/worse now/then, just that it's no longer something that I will be engaging in from a betting perspective.
Report stu December 21, 2023 11:47 AM GMT
All very good points cider.

The odd thing is that from a betting perspective this year was one of the easiest really - Earps was over evens for plenty time after she had done what she did to win it. Fair play to GB for being early in pointing it out.

BTW I love your point above:

I can absolutely guarantee however that less than 10% of the voting audience for her have any thorough knowledge of the rather niche world of global female footballing goalkeepers, and would most likely struggle to even name another one outside of Britain.

Like you said, this is no longer a recognition of greatness in sport primarily, but a chat show style magazine presentation of what the BBC think sport is currently. Would be interesting to see it on a different channel for sure, maybe even a sports channel like SKY?
Report Cider December 21, 2023 12:01 PM GMT
Definitely stu, well done to anyone who cleaned up. There's certainly a betting angle still (for other people!). Probably as many gamblers are still playing in the market under the old rules of engagement. When I bet, I use my instincts primarily, and they are not suited to the new scenario. That goes for most specials events atm. SCD was once a cash machine, and this year my only play was related to the old dead heat angle once the final was down to three places.
