It can't be calculated accurately nowadays as 'premium' streams have more weighting than free streams. The 600K was the day before the ones that count. Nobody knows the streaming levels for the chart week coming, aside from that they are likely to be huge, maybe 5 million just on you tube for example. With LB's great start, he's moved further ahead but Mariah remains the nearest threat, for me.

Let the games begin. As of now, we are officially inside the Christmas chart survey period. All sales and streams of singles in the UK from now until midnight on December 24th will count towards the Christmas chart. And on this blog I'll try to give as many updates as I can as to how the race is going.

One small procedural issue should be noted. Readers of this in previous years will know I've been able to post detailed updates on some of the numbers involved as the week unfolds, this thanks to contacts in the industry leaking them to me ahead of time. This time around thanks to my Music Week role I do myself have privileged access to that data, but this actually means I'm bound by confidentiality not to abuse that or break the strict embargos that exist around midweek information. So regrettably the only information I can recount is that which the Official Charts Company themselves have chosen to put in the public domain, although I will do my best to colour in any detail, expand on matters they are vague about and at the very least try to give any sensible analysis that is required.

Here's hoping for something resembling an actual race. The worst of all worlds is one single soaring into an unassailable lead and rendering all subsequent debate irrelevant.

It's obviously exaggerated but he doesn't take himself seriously. I was pretty skeptical that the enthusiasm would have carried through, but it has. Ed wrote this last year and it wasn't supposed to be released yet. He's fully going for the number one spot. He knows it's there for the taking. The lyrics are perfect for the situation we are in. Okay maybe he won't romp the win, but this will resonate will people bigtime, not jsut his die-hard fans.

It's hard to argue releasing a song half way through the chart week is fully going for it.

Shape Of You scored 90K streaming points with 13.4 million streams, when the ratio was 1-150 audio only. Over 7 days. Say Ed does 10 million streams in 4 days, average ratio 300 that's 33.3K. So he needs something like 7.5 million streams a day to be in the race. 13.4 million (1.91 million per day) is the audio streaming record).
