Rory not best pleased is he?

Rory aint a popular lad for some reason.  Is it due to him chossing to represent Ireland at the Olympics?

Not even a 'sportsman' IMO.

Hes got as much personality as a lampost

wozniacki's leftovers got what he deserved tonight. c unt

the Ireland factor is surely a part

Lewis is proud to fly the Union Jack, but obviously not too proud to pay his taxes like the rest of us.....

Great night for the good guys

BBC got their "politically correct" winner

Pleasing, Dementieva? Most, MOST pleasing, I`d say.

R1gged because of the bbc connection

Does formula 1 get lottery funding?

Is there a cleaner market than SPOTY? Relentless money for Rory, 1.6 into 1.2 before phone lines opened then into 1.1.

The bull ring, my mates got a new broom

It's a very dangerous market to be too strongly in given that it is decided on the night. The price drop may have let some of those who had been too into Rory to get out

Not MOST pleasing, Tim. Nice though. Small bet

Market up for next year already. Early £160 on Lewis at 3.

someone no doubt backing hamilton thinking he's won for 2015 market

Very strange , I got spooked and wasted £200 on rory , mental note have convictions with your owns belief and certain polls

Tbf, It is MOST pleasing for a Specials market, Yes

Ian Poulter running his mouth on Twitter
'complete joke', even @ signed Lewis in the tweet

most of the money to make on McIlroy was to be had earlier in the year and those who went in for him then must have done ok. I reckon the rise back up to 1.6 ish must have trapped some people though

To be fair, they've both done incredibly this year, so he's talking sh!te. I'm stunned Rory didn't win, but you could have made a very genuine case for all 10 imo.

i told you lot that the Telegraph poll for SPOTY that I posted on this thread always has it spot on.

every year it calls it spot on... well done lewis baackers

I also found it pleasing having read this awful article in the Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/nov/24/lewis-hamilton-lack-popularity-black-formula-1-champion#comments

Basically the author was attacking the British public for being too racist to like Hamilton

well done winners

well done lewis,

unlucky stevie gee backers at evens, and johnny wilk backer, ....ouch

Lol. I'd forgotten all about the Steven Gerrard money.

#SPOTY2014 votes: Hamilton 209,920, McIlroy 123,745, Pavey, 99,913.

wow. 1.66 into 1.1 and losing 2 votes to 1 to lewis.

Pavey would have been 2nd but for the Rory pimpage

blimey

STILL no 2015 thread?  Most unusual. GB?

Start it Tim

Hamilton 209,920
McIlroy 123,745
Pavey 99,913
Dujardin 75,814
Gallagher/Evans 35,871
Yarnold 23,188
Whitlock 17,219
Bale 13,747
Froch 11,616
Peaty 9,899

That's an incredible result for Dujardin. I think her achievements shone above pretty much above all 10 but you'd be doing a great job to convince enough people it's a sport.

I don`t know anything about it, couldn`t write any sense on it.  Best left to someone more knowledgeable. You do it.

driving a car, driving a little white ball, driving a horse,

only jo did it solo of top 4.

McIlroy-Bale 1-2 if they were both English?

I'll leave it to hems

They will probably cancel the show

bear, I watched that film. Three quarters of the way through, I realised I had already seen it! Watched til the end, though, enjoyable.

bale didnt do very well in welsh spoty vote

Cyclist Geraint Thomas has been voted the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality 2014 at an awards ceremony in Cardiff.
The Team Sky rider succeeds rugby union star Leigh Halfpenny, who won in 2013.
Results of a public vote were revealed at the Wales Sport Awards,  in which BBC Cymru Wales and Sport Wales celebrated Welsh sporting success.
Jo Coombs took the Coach of the Year award after leading the Welsh rhythmic gymnastics squad to eight medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Thomas, 28, went straight from his highest-placed finish in the Tour de France to the Commonwealth Games, where he won a bronze in the Time Trial and then claimed gold in the Road Race in dramatic fashion - overcoming a late puncture and a wheel change to cross the finish line first.
Those performances helped Thomas, who won Olympic gold in 2012, secure the public vote just ahead of second placed gymnast Frankie Jones and mountain biker Manon Carpenter in third.

The other seven nominees chosen by an expert panel for BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality 2014 were footballer Gareth Bale, cyclists Elinor Barker and Rachel James, swimmers Jazz Carlin and Georgia Davies, golfer Jamie Donaldson and Judoka Natalie Powell.

Three quarters of the way through, I realised I had already seen it!

Tim

No mention of the Ultimate Warrior in the memorial montage

Didn't participate, but noticed this afternoon reading the RP in the bookies, they recommended a bet at 13/8 Jo Pavey to be 3rd.  Better bet than lumping on the fav in hindsight....

For reference, price movements on the final day:

Rory McIlroy - having been matched as low as 1.09 after he won the PGA Championship (having already won The Open), he then slowly drifted the more likely Hamilton's chance of winning the F1 title became. During the week leading up to the show, he was around 1.5, On the day of the show, he was mostly trading in the 1.6s but then there was a sudden shortening of price in the half hour before the show started at 8pm. He was low 1.4s at 8pm and then constantly shortened during the show (even though the phone lines hadn't yet opened) and eventually hit a low of 1.1 before then bouncing a little to 1.2. His last price matched was 1.15

Lewis Hamilton -
Spent most of Sunday trading in the 2.6 to 2.9 range. Upon McIlroy's shorting, he obviously drifted. He was 3.4 at 8pm and hit a high of 10 before shortening a little. His last price matched was 6.6.

Jo Pavey - as third fav outright (with Bale not far behind) had spent the final week shortening from around 2.5 to near Evs for a Top 3 place, then during the show shortened again down to low 1.6s

James Corrigan in The Telegraph

"At least we now can be clear that it is too dangerous to allow the public to decide upon two things - the death penalty and Sports Personality of the Year.

Golf is less annoyed and more befuddled by the Rory Mcllroy snub in the BBC “show” on Sunday. The pros who took to social media to express their bafflement at the world No 1 being outvoted by Lewis Hamilton told their own story.

Could the UK public not understand the magnitude of what McIlroy achieved in the summer? Could they not see that in that remarkable run from the Open through to the USPGA, McIlroy produced a stretch of form that was perhaps of a higher quality than any produced by any UK sports person in any era? What exactly does he have to do to win it? Invent penicillin?

Luke Donald hit the balata on the head when saying that as long as SPOTY is a public vote such farces will be replayed. Let’s face it, the public are fools when it comes to weighing up excellence. They do not judge dispassionately. If they did Hamilton would not have a sniff of beating McIlroy in a poll. And that is whether the award is based on performance or personality.

If I was McIlroy I would not bother turning up again. He does not need it, certainly not for his ego. Hamilton turned up at the Glasgow Hydro with his dog. McIlroy turned up with the responsibility of being No 1 in his sport. Golf is struggling with its participation levels and McIlroy saw an opportunity to spread the gospel to a wider audience.

But no, it seems that this wider audience prefers fast cars to a sport in which integrity is at its core. It seems that this wider audience do not grasp the fact that Hamilton essentially had one serious rival to beat on his way to the world title, while McIlroy had at least 70 serious rivals, as well as so many more invariables, to conquer on his way to becoming the first European golfer to win three different majors.

When McIlroy tees off at the Masters in April in his bid to become just the sixth player in history to complete the career Grand Slam he will not have superior equipment than the other golfers, he will simply have a far superior talent. No doubt, Hamilton is more talented than the rest as well. But that would mean nought if his car was not up to scratch.

So, yes, it is a disgrace that McIlroy did not win SPOTY. It is easy to see why. Golfers did not vote for him, because, well, golfers are not the type to switch on to a “show” which long ago traded in its dignity to appeal to the common denominator addicted to all that reality guff.

If you want to know how far SPOTY has descended since the days when it was an understated appreciation of the UK sporting year then look no further than Simple Minds opening the “show”. By the time the credits rolled - it has to be said, with no credit whatsoever - the booking of that band appeared so appallingly appropriate."

At least we now know who was backing McIlroy at 1.1

James Corrigan from the telegraph...should really know better

No one is going to vote for someone who has opted to play for ireland in the next olympics.

Golf rage

irish not allowed to vote though are they ?
there not allowed in big brother i think

Even in the days when it was an understated appreciation of the sporting year Princess Anne and David Broome won.  Not forgetting dual wins for both Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill.  Dressage is hardly a "plebs" sport, it's about as stuck up a sport as you could possibly get. The "Simple Minds" are more from the Telegragh demographic than The Sun

Bitter, snotty, broke, loser. Did he not believe his own paper`s polling? Muppet!

I think the forum must have James Corrigan's shirt
