Actress Natalie Gumede could be forced to miss this weekend's Strictly Come Dancing as she awaits a medical opinion an agonising back problem.
The former Coronation Street star had to miss training yesterday and went for an MRI scan amid fears that she may have slipped a disc which would cast a shadow over her involvement in the show.
Gumede has already proved to be a dancefloor talent, topping the leader board again at the weekend after achieving a score of 36 from the awestruck judging panel for her rumba to Rihanna's Love The Way You Lie.

The former Coronation Street actress – the bookmakers’ favourite at 11/8 to lift the glitterball – was taken to hospital after doubling up in agony during training.
She was given a precautionary scan and ordered to rest for at least 48 hours, meaning she faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s live show.
Her condition will be assessed again tomorrow but show insiders are deeply troubled at the prospect of one of the stars of the series having to leave early.
A source told the Daily Express there were “lots of tears” after her back flared up during another gruelling training session with professional partner Artem Chigvintsev.
Everyone has their fingers crossed for Natalie, but we are all frantically waiting.
Strictly insider
Last night the 31-year-old Russian said: “We had to finish rehearsals early on Tuesday because of the pain in Natalie’s back – she might not be able to continue.”
Natalie, 29, had started the series as a 14/1 rank outsider with bookies Ladbrokes, but a series of sizzling dances saw her odds slashed.
Experts think that her back pain is a recurrence of an old injury from when she was a teenager.
The soap actress has already courted controversy with some claiming she has an unfair advantage over the rest of the celebrities because she is an expert in cabaret, contralto, jazz, Latin American and tap dancing.
The CV her agents distributed described her as “highly skilled” in performing arts, and it emerged she worked professionally until she suffered an injury aged 19.
Her former teacher, Susan Chippendale, 66, said: “She was one of my best tap dancers. She got very high marks in her final tap exams. Obviously, if you’ve trained before, your brain is used to telling your feet what to do.”
If Natalie is forced to leave, odds on this year’s winner would be thrown wide open. Ladbrokes revealed twice as much money had been staked on Natalie to win compared with rivals, singer Sophie Ellis-Bextor, 34 (currently second favourite at 11/4), Hollyoaks heart-throb Ashley Taylor Dawson, 31 (now 5/1), TV presenter Susanna Reid (7/1) and model Abbey Clancy (12/1).
A Strictly source said: “Everyone has their fingers crossed for Natalie, but we are all frantically waiting.
“Her appearance on Saturday is still in jeopardy, but we are all hoping she will be fit to dance.”

Corrie star Natalie Gumede is blogging exclusively for Yahoo as she tries her luck at Strictly Come Dancing this year with partner Artem Chigvintsev. She topped the leaderboard (again) with her rumba on Saturday night but was struck down on Tuesday with an agonising back injury and fears she may not be able to keep dancing...
By this point in the Strictly process, I'm learning to expect the unexpected. No surprise shocks me.
Saturday's rumba was fraught with mistakes, getting heels caught in my dress, and erm....shall we say 'improvised hairography' which was disorientating.
None of which happened in the dress run or any other rehearsal, but Artem supported me though all my faults, and because of the emotion of the dance we were lucky enough to get a great response.
By the end of the evening when we made it through the eliminations we were both feeling quite choked after what had been a long and tiring week, and I am really starting to realise just how much I love this process and how I want to soak up every moment and learn everything I can from the very BEST in the business.
This week we are dancing the quickstep, and upon hearing the music we were dancing to - a reworking of Usher's 'Yeah' - I was immediately excited. Artem's choreography is incredible, and we were having such great fun interacting through the dance that we knew were going to have the time of our lives on the Strictly stage.
Tuesday's rehearsal however, brought a nasty halt to the good time we were having. Part way through the quickstep I started to feel faint, and upon repeating the dance I started to notice my back seizing up to the point where I was unable to lift my leg. The next time I tried, an agonising pain shot from my bottom down my leg, and my lower back started throbbing.
What was particularly terrifying was that the pain was all too familiar, as I had had a back injury 10 years ago that has given me problems on and off ever since.
I was just so lucky to be with Artem at the time who kicked straight into action, as well the lovely people at Strictly. My life for the last 48 hours has been The Only Way Is Harley Street, and what a scary 48 hours it's been.
I've been through three GP appointments, two back specialists, an MRI scan and now an epidural/steroid injection - and I STILL don't know if I can dance on Saturday night.
The original fear was a slipped disc which has now been eliminated, but there is still some bulging of the disc and wearing of the facet joint which is causing nerve pain through the legs. Under normal circumstances, rest would be the order of the day - under these circumstances, I need to get physical in less than 24 hours to stand a chance of making the live show.
I am now waiting to have the steroid injection, a few hours after which my verdict will be delivered; but for now the jury is still out.

Natalie, who is currently at the top of the Strictly leader board with 36 points, has had to miss two days of training to fit in an MRI scan yesterday and physio treatment this morning. We’ll keep you posted on developments as and when they happen, but in the meantime, we wish Natalie a very speedy recovery.

Prognosis[2] The prognosis for acute sciatica is favourable for most people. The herniated portion of an intervertebral disc causing sciatica tends to regress over time and 66% of people have at least partial resolution after six months. About 50% of people with acute sciatica report some improvement within ten days and about 75% reported some improvement after four weeks. However, up to 30% of people continue to have pain for one year or longer. The prognosis is worse for women and people who initially have greater disability or pain

the crucial thing is to stop the activity which aggravates the pain as soon as possible because the pressure to the nerve can cause thickening (outer cells die due to pinching, but do not disappear, new cell growth then increases pressure causing further cell death and over time this leads to an increase in the diameter of the nerve which then is crushed more easily... and this leads to a lengthening of the rehab process with many never recovering completely)
My advice to Nat: pack it in, get well come back in another series, continuing could cause serious long term problems

If it's genuine she's a long shot to finish the course. I also suffered what she is reported to have, I couldn't even get in and out of my car. The pain is indescribable and to be honest dancing of any description would have been impossible. Dulling the area could cause irreversible damage, in the name of a meaningless celebrity dance show would be ridiculous. It's either being exacerbated out of all proportion, or she will have to quit.

Get the violins out when they play the VT. She will obviously be hoping that 'struggling on' will gain her far more popularity than the three dances she has done. Clearly if she was very badly injured she would already be out of the competition - only a complete attention seeker would sacrifice their health for the sake of trying to win a competition like this.
