Ok a few of you might have noticed that i keep going on about a 999/1 shot with a chance of winning SPOTY.

I will now reveal his name - David Weir.

Going for 4 Paralympic gold medals and from all accounts has a decent chance of getting them. Will give him a unique selling point of having the most Olympics golds (from either Olympics) and also will have the "sympathy vote" (don't mean that in a bad way).

I was hoping to get more than the £20 I have on him at 999/1 but it looks like the price has now gone. But if he somehow does win 4 golds he could trade quite low.

Do not underestimate these paralympics - they will be massive.

Can't see it myself. Think he'll struggle to make the 10 - would have thought Elie would be their token Para athlete if they want one on the list.
They're probably more likely to create a special new category - Para athlete of the year.
Report GeorgeBrush September 5, 2012 6:04 PM BST
Could maybe see both making a 10, but then the vote is split and both a fcked. Come November these prices will look like madness

Absolutely noone is talking about paralympics in my circles. Individuals don't stand a hope, good call on the price tho.
Report johnnyrant September 5, 2012 8:08 PM BST
Probably joint winners of team award knowing the Beeb - the full Olympic team (for record medal haul) & the plucky limb-challenged team. Dead-heat rules to apply for TOTY backers of Paras team.
Report Cider September 5, 2012 8:15 PM BST
None of the paras make the 10 (if it is to be 10) and Team Award seems the most sensible option.
Doubt any of the Para competitors want pity votes, but it's very hard for the lay person to judge achievements in that field.
Report Meat Loaf September 5, 2012 8:18 PM BST
I can absolutly guarantee there will be at least 1 if not 2 Paralympians on the shortlist. BBC will not want another controversy like last year. It is bad enough to be seen as sexist never mind seen to be discriminating against disability.

The coverage isn't really C4's fault. They pay to take the feed from the OBC who are contracted to provide the pictures - clearly marathon in full isn't part of their remit.

Disagree George. Weir will be on all the front pages tomorrow.

He has a unique story being in a wheelchair - won more golds than any other Olympian this year (bar Storey who has no chance).

I make him a 12/1 shot
Report GeorgeBrush September 9, 2012 1:21 PM BST
Similar chance to Storey. None whatsoever
Report Meat Loaf September 9, 2012 1:24 PM BST
I said on the opening thread george- do not underestimate these Paralympics.

Weir is in a unique position - being obviosuly disabled, but comes across as normal guy on the street. And has won 4 (yes four) gold medals.

(3) Murray/Weir

Not sure why you are getting so stressed about this lamoot. You weren't the one who layed him at 999/1 were you?
Report timbuctooth September 9, 2012 2:48 PM BST
20 backed at 1000 laid off at, let`s say 30, leaves 640 green on the whole field. Not bad trading.

Indeed Tim.
Excellent call meat loaf.
Report Asparagus Man September 10, 2012 9:07 AM BST
He's not going to win - to be honest I think Peacock and Simmonds are more natural SPOTY candidates, but this remains an excellent trade.

I spent quite a bit of time and money getting some big priced Olympians onside - turns out I was looking at the wrong event.
Report GeorgeBrush September 10, 2012 9:11 AM BST
I'd have said Peacock should be the one steaming into 30s. And Ellie for that matter, she did of course. Weir has only niche appeal compared to those two, and neither of them would stand a chance
Report Dizzy42 September 10, 2012 11:40 AM BST
All it would need is a big campaign by disability charities and surely someone like Weir would have a tremendous chance of making the frame at least...?

Still think Mo has it in the bag, with big support also guaranteed for Wiggo - but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a Paralympian on the podium.  Murray winning tonight of course could change that.
Report johnnyrant September 10, 2012 2:50 PM BST
What about Sarah Storey - 4 golds for her... could make the list.
Report Asparagus Man September 10, 2012 3:21 PM BST
Not impossible a Paralympian could break the Top 3, but having two of them on the shortlist would kill both their chances imo.
Report timbuctooth September 10, 2012 3:24 PM BST
I think the time is ripe for a campaign on behalf of one of the papalympians. It`s too `right on` for the BBC to allow the opportunity to pass. Having backed Weir at bigger prices,I`m keeping  him well onside. Just in case.

Report johnnyrant September 10, 2012 3:39 PM BST
In such a stellar sporting year as this, Tim, I don't think the timing is right. Yes, overt political correctness is the Beeb's middle name but Weir doesn't come across as very votable imho - also, his exploits would have passed many by with Paras tucked away on C4 - I only saw the 800m & that was purely out of SPOTY interest to see if he won a 3rd gold at the time.

I don`t think even the BBC could get Weir over the line. However, a concerted campaign could certainly drive his price down to mid-teens, maybe more. I`ve laid off  enough from him to not be too worried, but have decided to hold what green I have, out of greed, mainly!
Report Meat Loaf September 10, 2012 4:43 PM BST
I'm actually a bit concerned I might have layed most of it off too early! Still got 4k on Weir but layed the rest off at prices 26-30.

If I HAD to choose which price Weir would hit first, 10, or 1000, I fear I would have to answer `1000`. He has already served us both well, so no need for concern, but, in reality, this is probably as good as it`s going to get.
Report Meat Loaf September 10, 2012 5:46 PM BST
Yep true - lets not be greedy! But still think Weir is a biggish price.

Farah a big green for me now - so hoping for Mo!
Report GeorgeBrush September 10, 2012 5:54 PM BST
Cast off your post-euphoric delusions. This is exactly the sort of stuff that makes spoty a trader's dream. New paradigm as soon as anyone wins anything
Report GeorgeBrush September 10, 2012 5:55 PM BST

Report timbuctooth September 10, 2012 5:57 PM BST
I am being a bit greedy, reluctant to lose a still largish green, and then, possibly, just possibly, having to watch him hit much lower prices. I`d rather enjoy the hope of the ride, even if it eventually leads to 1000ville. Sometimes  heart over head can work.

It's a very fair point.  It has only been the ridiculous attitude of the BBC having to have one para reference for each Olympic reference that has generated any interest at all.  Now that we are done with the parade it will be back to normal business with the paras fading even faster than the memory of Wiggins now that Murray mania takes over and everything else struggles to even be sighted in the daily football w*ank fest.
