Is it better than Alex's 69? Double the points for a start, as well as a lot more difficult pots, but there was a lot more on the line for Alex so I'm not sure I could decide between them. Heart says Alex's, head says Selby's I suppose.

As regards Ronnie's 147 minus one break, am I alone in thinking he did not make the sincerest of efforts to get position on the black while potting the red to the middle?

I've watched the break maybe 10 times recorded it,never have recorded snooker in any shape or form,i'd just put them on a par I think because I could watch both over and over again.Apparently Selby is boring,where is that thread,the more you've played the game the more you appreciate Selby as a cueist,think a lot on here just see balls being potted and have never played before the comments they make.But as been saying since it started the pockets allow you to make shots that really shouldn't be on,think there were 21 breaks over 50 in o'sullivans match from 23 frames including that 146.Selby had 4 centurys 3 total clearences in 4 frames and could've been 4/4 when missing on 64,because they are playing so generous you can stil have a bit of a twitch and get away with it,cannot possibly go on like this it's beyond a joke..

think he tried just didn't put enough side on there's a shot in the higgins break on the blue that was similar but was 10 times harder probably greatest shot i have ever seen

great break but best clearance ever?? he was ten frames up with eleven to play , no pressure more exhibition

You said it perfectly.  Any comment about what is achieved on these tables should come with a Hearn warning.

I think he partly in exhibition mode - wanted to give the crowd a bit of value. Nevertheless a nice memorable moment at the Crucible on the 40th anniversary even with the 'chamfered' pocket drops.

Got to prefer the 69 break for style and the high pressure Alex was under. Although from where the balls were Selby's looks a more difficult one technically.

Apparently Selby is boring,where is that thread,the more you've played the game the more you appreciate Selby as a cueist,think a lot on here just see balls being potted and have never played before the comments they make

yes I must admit that attitude towards him p1sses me off as well, although you have to be of a certain persuasion to like him imo

if you appreciate a hard grind, quality safety, sensible shot choices, controlled aggression, an unparalleled temperament etc etc then selby really is your man
if you like show ponies then there are plenty others around the stable to choose from

I am a selby man, especially for this event, and a fat juicy green @ 9/2 & 5/1 doesn't do any harm

It's nothing to with that my favourite player of ll time was Alex Higgins,followed by white,then converted to Hendry as well because of the way he played under pressure even when behind a universe infront of everyone else.So I like all types pf players actually was a Ronnie fan till about 10 years ago then excuses excuses,just very tedious and plenty of players were better than him under pressure even with all his ability was massive mark Williams fan as well,2 years of some of the best snooker I've seen under pressure.Selby is the only player you can put amongst those lot,anyone who likes snooker and understands the game knows how brilliant he is when he's playing well,think he's the cleverest player that's ever played the game and has every shot in the book,as much cue power as anyone and yet gets called boring,unbelievable..

I couldn't back him at 9/2 after putting a preview on him at 12/1 last year and ding at 33s so a missed opportunity this year,in saying that I couldn't back ding he's had so many chances bit like trump,of course this year he plays to another level.

As Ronnie said....'146 is the new 147'.

Most will know this but the highest break gets 10K and a maximum?? A measly 5K. You couldn't make it up.

personally think Mark was just having a laugh showing everyone just how easy the pockets are.

Watching Selby is an absolute pleasure for me.

Having said that I think Ding will gradually pull away from him.  Throughout the season I have said Selby seems to need more chances than is usual.
I certainly am not carried away with what I have seen so far but will not complain if I am wrong.

John Higgins is no cert to beat Hawkins and while Higgins was a class above Ding not sure that is the case now and certainly Hawkins is not in the same parish as Ding.

Looking at the players we are producing now its difficult to see anyone remotely in the class of Hendry. O'Sullivan, Williams and Higgins and even China has not found a new Ding so its obvious the conditions are not right for class to prevail.
Selby is very watchable but it will take a few more titles for me to elevate him to that group above.

Selby's 143 was great break but not even close to the Alex 69 for me.

Have to agree frames, not in the same parish.

Alex just kept running out of position,he made the break difficult by having to produce amazing pots.From memory there was only one red on a cushion whereas Selby had 6 I think and he started the break tight on the baulk cushion.Of course no comparison in the situations they both were in regards importance of the frames but nobody will convince me it was near the quality of break by Selby.Seen many crazy good breaks but this one by Selby will go down in Crucible folklore as the greatest televised break of all time.

Its the same as the hendry/osullivan greatest ever arguments, there are compelling factors either way.

Someone mentioned style earlier and thats where Alex has the edge for me. The winks and smiles to the crowd as he went around the table, like he already knows his destiny and is just toying with their emotions, only Alex that...only Alex

You cannot escape the only solid indisputable fact, what Selby did was not on a championship table set up, it was compiled on an exhibition table setup.
The difference is huge.

Its a bit like Robbo's hundred centuries in a season, some shameful stage management was deeply involved, all for publicity.

Hearn has made it very clear that snooker is in the entertainment business and is a product to sell. The players must play their part, the commentators must play their part and management must play their part.

Spot on.How about the 3rd to last red Selby potted ,1/4" off the cushion all the way and drops in ,embarrassing.If Higgins had played that shot he'd have been hoping for the double in the opposite black pocket.(I know it was blocked by a red).
