Irish rugby has been stale for too long, with too many players guaranteed their place despite consistently disappointing. His generation had their chance to shine, but proved themselves to be perennial underachievers. I was hoping for a totally fresh start under Schmidt, but this does not bode well.

It was perfectly scripted for him to go out at the top in style, but it would appear that greed has gotten the better of him.

Surprised he was selected he didn't set the 6N alight, must have been for his experience.

Did any of the centres light up the 6N? BOD produced the moment of the championship for me with that pass against Wales and he's still the top defender in this hemisphere.

how do you know they were underachievers dunc, after all if  they were "perennial" underachievers then maybe that is just how good they were and the expectation of the public was simply too high?

They dominated Europe at provincial level for years, but the same players do not perform in green. They've shown in flashes what they're capable of, but there's never been any consistency. Whether that's down to the players or coaches or both is open to debate, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Ireland have underachieved over the past 5-10 years.

BOD was always likely to go on the tour as long as he could walk.  Very few players the Aussies would have bad dreams about and he tops a short list with Wilko being the other.

Normally I would agree with the 'play as long as you are able' adage.

However, in BODs case, he has had a more than full career already. He has put his body through hellish abuse and  achieved most things in the game.  I just hope he is doing the right thing because he deserves a good ending and to enjoy his retirement with his health.

Keep her light BOD I say. He's the greatest 13 every and Irelands greatest rugby player and perhaps sporting icon. We don't have a replacement and even with his pace diminishing he is still so good defensively acting as a third flanker and it badly shows when he's not on the field

I'd be delighted to see him cement a partnership with Luke Marshall and let Marshall do teh hard yards/blowing gaps wide open through the middle

I wonder what chance we could patch him up enough to get him to RWC2013. He's tweeted No chance. Ladbrokes have priced it up at 4/1 he plays for Ireland at the RWC
