Ok, but what's your source and why has Gatland picked a captain who doesn't captain his club or national team or is even first choice for his national team?

I've always liked Ryan Jones, but a lot of people don't even have him in the Lion's squad let alone as captain.
Report curious-cat April 26, 2013 7:10 PM BST
There's a lot to like RM.
Report RugbyMan April 26, 2013 7:35 PM BST
Maybe so, but the general opinion seems to be that Warburton is going to be named and it seems weird to pick an occasional international starter as captain for a major tour.

It may be true, I don't know any better, but would like to know if this rumour has any grounding in fact.
Report JOCI Club April 26, 2013 8:26 PM BST
Ryan could do a job, but already with 4 Welsh back rowers in 'contention' for a place in the squad, Warburton, Lydiate, Faletau & Tipiruc he'd be an outside bet for me at best.

Poor wind up. Never in a million years
Report curious-cat April 27, 2013 2:14 PM BST
Ryan Jones has captained Wales on 32 occasions, overtaking the record of 28 held by Ieuan Evans on 16 November 2012 versus Samoa.[1] He has been involved in three Grand Slam wins, in 2005, as captain in 2008, and 2012. He is one of a small group of Welsh players to have won three Grand
Slams including Gethin Jenkins, Adam Jones, Gareth Edwards, Gerald Davies and JPR Williams.

In January 2008, Jones was appointed captain of Wales by new coach Warren Gatland. In his first Six Nations tournament as captain, he led his team to a second Grand Slam in four years.

Many supporters were surprised when he was not initially selected for the 44-man squad for the 2005 British and Irish Lions tour to New Zealand. He was later called up as a replacement for the injured Simon Taylor. After his performance in the 30–19 win over Otago he was selected for the squad for the first test. He came on as a replacement and went on to start in the final two tests.

He fought his way back into the Welsh team after being discarded ( showing loyalty and no animosity ) captaining them 3 times in 2013 when they won the championship.

A better record than many candidates for the Lions captaincy.
Report RugbyMan April 27, 2013 2:19 PM BST
No doubt CC, but would you pick him to start the first test? It almost certainly means 3 Welsh players, which I doubt will be an issue for you, but means that one of Tipuric, Warburton or Faletau has to drop out (as well as Brown, Robshaw, O'Brien and Lydiate).

Maybe Gatland is thinking that he has a lot of talented back-rows, but not enough experience and wants to have Jones in there to guide them round.
Report curious-cat April 27, 2013 7:00 PM BST
agreed RM

unlikely to make the 1st test but would be useful on the bench considering his versatility.

BOD has had his hothead moments and wouldn't be my idea of a Lions captain.

Picture Willie John as Lions captain leaning back in an armchair smoking a pipe whilst being harangued by the hotel manager following a certain level of destruction and being threatened with the South African police ..........

'There's nobody killed is there ? '

equally Alun Wyn Jones has had his moments of stupidity on the pitch .... though not for some time.
Report Monstrous Bryan April 27, 2013 9:11 PM BST
One thing that has been said is that Gatland is considering picking a 'tour captain' that is not a 100% starter for the first test. Thing is, I reckon it's more likely to be a BOD or POC than Ryan Jones
Report curious-cat April 28, 2013 12:03 AM BST
POC would be in my Lions team.

memory fails whether he's made any bloomers as a captain [ such as the wrong option re kicking at goal/running it ] but he seems good at firing up the team and leading from the front.

Got to be POC. Guaranteed test starter. Has the respect of all players. Natural candidate.
Report NonShy.. April 29, 2013 4:56 PM BST
I'd just like to confirm this is not a wind up, i ain't no troll... no liquidity on the markets and not trying to influence anyone. Bookies not taking bets.

I've had a decent bet myself based on this information but I expect to lose, as I think he may even struggle to make the squad!

My choice would be POC but given Gatland's relationship with Wales, reports in the papers, and ladbrokes suspending betting due to flurry of bets makes me think it will be Warburton.
Report sewter lives again April 29, 2013 5:26 PM BST
Radio Wales reported it as a done job today saying that they expected SW to be named captain after reports from a paper with links to the player
Report casm May 1, 2013 3:00 PM BST
Ladbrokes are refusing to pay out (online) on Warburton. They have said that he must lead them out for the first test match to be paid, if he fails to do so then bets will be void.

Anybody else know of someone who has had a bet with them and been paid or not, or any other problems with any other bookies?
Report northanlite May 2, 2013 11:43 AM BST
can you remember if the market clearly stated it was "to be named captain for the first test"
i didn't really look at these markets but i did assume most of them were based on who was to be named captain of the touring party.
i wouldn't put anything past ladcrooks these days. their PR is appalling and their prices are even worse (especially on horse racing.)

what they don't get is that even the so called mug punters who don't mind taking a slightly worse price rather than cross the street are however not willing to be ripped off anymore by taking prices way under the competition on books with criminal overrounds.
as a result their shops near where i live (they have 2 across the road from each other) have tumbleweed blowing through them while the hills up the road always seems busy.

btw whoever gave that guy the "information" that ryan jones was going to be captain must have some sort of serious grudge against him.
Report casm May 2, 2013 12:09 PM BST
It wasn't my bet. A friend who is in his 40s who is still 'old school' kept getting told in the shop he visits that he will get a free bet if he opened an account with his odds on card. He opened the account, placed two small bets on SW to be captain and also put his free bet on it as well. His total winnings were under £250 and although he was paid out on the free bet, his staked wagers were not paid.

The best states to be named Captain of the 2013 British and Irish Lions.

He called customer services and they wont do anything at all as the traders state the bet is still 'Open' and that SW must take to the field for the first test for it to be paid. If another player captains the side that day then the bet will be void.

It is a lovely way to treat a new customer
Report northanlite May 2, 2013 12:22 PM BST
regardless of whether he plays in the first test or not he has been named captain of the touring party. presumably there must be others in the same boat as your friend?
i suggest he asks for clarification of exactly what the wording of the market he bet into was.
Report casm May 2, 2013 12:31 PM BST
They wont even speak to him there. They said there was a clause in the bet that said the player had to take the field although I haven't been able to find it. The wording is exactly as I stated above, I got him to take a screenshot of the bets and if SW doesn't play that day then he can go to IBAS. They would not even give him a complaint number or allow it to go to the Solutions Dept there.

Was just interested to see if others had a similar outcome from them.
Report northanlite May 2, 2013 12:36 PM BST
that sounds like utter rubbish as you could have a scenario where 3 or 4 players end up captaining the team at various times on tour. are they paying out on all of them??? i think not.
Report TheVis May 3, 2013 8:50 AM BST
How do they explain the fact then that he has been paid out on his free bet?
Report TheVis May 3, 2013 8:53 AM BST
PS might be worth having a go at them on Twitter.  There was an incident with Laddies in the RL Cas v Wakey game where they had paid out on some bets but not others - game finished early due to floodlight failure and their ts&cs were ambiguous.  One bloke on here wasn't getting paid out online despite his brother having been paid in a shop.  Eventually it got sorted but only after he badgered them on Twitter.
Report TheVis May 3, 2013 8:59 AM BST
Also, why do they no longer have a "to be captain" market?  If their stance is the bet is on the captain taking the field on the day of the first test, then isn't it surprising that they are not still running a book on that market?  Of course Warburton will be very short but he is certainly no 1.01 shot.
Report curious-cat May 3, 2013 10:28 AM BST
he could be injured
Report curious-cat May 3, 2013 10:31 AM BST
clear case of misleading the punters

they are taking bets on who will be named captain not who will lead them out in the first test.

If it was the latter it should be clearly stated.
Report casm May 4, 2013 11:08 PM BST
He was paid out in full yesterday.

It took a number of calls, the customer relations department were not to blame, the traders would just not authorise payment. Eventually after threatening IBAS and the fact that they would not give him a complaint or reference number to actually contact IBAS with, they paid him yesterday.

As I said earlier, a terrible way to treat a new customer in his late forties who has resisted the internet and mobile apps until now.
Report stewardsenquirey May 4, 2013 11:49 PM BST
Not really misleading Punters if the market said
"Capatain For 1st Test"
Just means the insiders that thought they were infront, now might not be.
Everyone knows Sam can't handle the pressure as Captain for Country, let alone Lions first test.
Did make me laugh when asked what he would bring as Captain, basic answer was nothing other than gain experience.
This is not his fault, but Gatland now looks to be back tracking on what was a stupid decision.
Report BigRob1 May 5, 2013 1:03 AM BST

Warburton has been an excellent captain for Wales.

You can hardly fault his decision not to captain Wales against England as he wanted to concentrate on his game after missing games through injury.

result 30-3

What happened to the English captain ?

Oh yes he failed to make the Lions squad.
Report stewardsenquirey May 5, 2013 1:10 PM BST
CC,Warburton asked for the Captains band to be taken off him for Wales(and he improved 10 fold)
I'm don't doubt his ability, but with a Captains Armband on for the Lions I do.
His game will suffer, and so will the Lions.
imho Robshaw was very unlucky not to make the squad.
For me POC should lead the Lions(and I expect him to be the unofficial captain on the pitch anyway)
Poor Old Sam will be like a Rabbit in the headlights.

Warburton asked for the Captains band to be taken off him for Wales

not true -

Ryan Jones captained Wales while Warburton was injured.

'Ryan Jones, returning from a broken thumb, will replace Warburton as captain against France in Paris'

Ryan Jones broke a bone in his shoulder playing against Scotland and was unavailable against England

perhaps he was 10 times better than the previous no. 7 ? Tipuric Grin
