how can you ground a ball when your palm is facing upwards and your hand is about 6 inches above the ball...

Of course you can ground the ball with your palm facing upwards.
I really feel that had the TMO been given this camera shot then a try would have been given.

In instances like this, the ignorance of the laws displayed by a staggering number of pundits and punters alike never ceases to amaze me (this includes someone on another forum who identifies himself as an ex-ref!) How can someone who posts on a rugby forum read the relevant section of the laws (as posted by someone who actually understands the game) and still not understand them is beyond me. If I hear the phrase "downward pressure" mentioned again I may kill!
In other news, I hope those posting anti-English vitriol are equally one eyed and allow their emotions to cloud their thinking when placing their bets!

Another 'Hand of God' the rest of the World have to live with. The English Rugby Football Union 3rd division players played well above their usual poor standards and still got beaten.

having watched it again im not sure why Brown didnt rip the ball and ground it himself

As an England fan I want to agree that there was enough evidence to give the try. I don't believe the TMO had enough evidence to give it. No try was the correct decision.
As for the clip mentioned above - shows enough for a try IMO, just.

He did ground the ball unfortunately for England it wasn't over the line.
I think everybody realises the ball WAS over the line. You said he did ground the ball and then he didn't ground it, next week you'll be saying there was no ball. 
Academic- Braveheart Toby would have been down for the kick, but would have given it to Dan Cole to take ;-)
