And they're all thanking Burnham. Those who have to live near these low lives won't be thanking him.

Its a simple solution , just say to them if you want early release it comes with a 20 year suspended sentence , another offence and its 20 years inside , they can then choose .

The fact is the last government didn't build the prison capacity the country needs.

Bring back the birch for sentences of less than 6 months jail time. 5 strokes per month.

It took 33 months to build HMP Fosse Way, running from August 2020 to May 2023.
Construction Timeline
• Start Date: August 2020
• Completion Date: May 2023
• First Prisoners Arrived: May 29, 2023
• Official Opening: June 30, 2023

Fosse Way prison opens for business

12th June 2023

England’s newest ‘mega-prison’ has opened its gates – and locked them again – to admit its first residents.

HMP Fosse Way, in Glen Parva, Leicestershire, will eventually hold 1,930 men. It is managed by private operator Serco, which confirmed to Inside Time that the first prisoners were admitted on Monday, 29 May.

Only a few have arrived so far, and the population will gradually build up over coming months. The Ministry of Justice is planning to hold a formal opening ceremony in late June. In its monthly count of prison places – dated 26 May, a few days before the first prisoners arrived – the MoJ recorded the capacity of Fosse Way at 20 and its population as zero

The additional places are sorely needed at a time when the prison system is very close to being full. On June 2, there were 85,407 prisoners in England and Wales, just 900 short of the useable operational capacity. The Government has arranged for up to 400 police cells to be used to hold prisoners overnight when nearby jails are full, and has sought to reduce the prison population by extending the amount of time some prisoners can spend on Home Detention Curfew at the end of their sentence from four-and-a-half months to six.

Fosse Way, built at a cost of £286 million on the site of the former Glen Parva young offender institution, was originally planned to hold 1,680 men, and construction of this main section of the prison has been completed. Last December, planning approval was granted for a four-storey extension to accommodate a further 250 men, and this second phase is still being built.

It has been built as a “smart prison” with a design similar to that of HMP Five Wells, which opened last year in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire – featuring cell windows without bars, extensive use of technology, and a cellblock configuration which allows men to mix in smaller groups than on a traditional prison wing.

The Government has pledged to spend more than £4 billion building 20,000 extra prison places in England and Wales, to be available “by the mid-2020s”. This is intended to include six new prisons. Two of them, Five Wells and Fosse Way, have now opened. A third, HMP Millsike, is under construction, next door to HMP Full Sutton in the East Riding of Yorkshire. However, plans to build jails at three further sites next to existing jails – Garth in Lancashire, Gartree in Leicestershire and Grendon in Buckinghamshire – have yet to receive planning permission. A plan to build two prisons side-by-side on a disused airbase in Essex appears to have been scuppered when the Home Office announced plans to house asylum seekers at the site. Laugh

You'd be lucky to get planning permission for a prison in 33 months.

There'd be a telephone directory of objections and legal challenges.

Kemi Badenoch apologised in July 2026 for the Conservatives not building enough prison places during their 14 years in government.

She said:

“We did some things, as I said, it wasn’t enough, and I’m sorry about that.”

She acknowledged that the Conservatives had created 14,000 new prison places, but said this was “nowhere near enough”. She also attributed delays partly to Covid and planning/legal challenges.

Over the last 15 years, the UK has seen a Tory government that cut back so much on state spending, parcelled up in that is not planning and delivering enough prison places, amongst a whole host of other non-efforts. They are seen as so poor and ineffectual that the only other party of a power in a FPTP electoral system, gets in on a landslide, not because of anything magical to do with their policies, but due to countrywide opposition to the Tories. The new government has to change its leader within 2 years due to the monumental changes in direction – too numerous to mention. I’ve typed enough.

Just as well we have now had a Labour government for 2 years and 3 months. Who, after those 2 years and 3 months are letting hundreds of criminals out of prison too early. And my understanding is, that is set to continue.

The first thing the commies always do is release the prisoners.

I only looked into it for a few minutes, what it appears to me they are doing is turning over old style prisons and replacing them with woke ones, pseudo hotels. This appears deliberate. Several new prisons appear to have been opened in the last decade or so, yet the available places has remained virtually static. And, I assume, converting cells that have multiple occupancy to single, therefore also reducing the declared availability.
