Please change my mind on this. It just looks like he announced a policy which will alienate a huge part of the electorate.

Yes I'm aware as Labour voters will argue some may benefit. It might even be a good policy. I'll probably vote for it. But I can't see any way most older people don't intepret this as "he's taking my money". That's even before the tory rags get at it.

Disclaimer: I just laid Labour for a few hundred, I'd very happily lose it all tho if I was proven wrong.

I associate the majority of pensioners in the Tory/Reform/Brexit bracket,i think it would be a small enough hit to Labour.
Raising tax would probably have a more detrimental effect to their core voters.
Any 'hardship' however necessary will lose some voters.
People generally accept changes have to be done. Gut saying rejoining Europe in some form will happen, and maybe sooner than later, that would be a bigger issue possibly but could be a Labour gamechanger?

Laying Farage next PM is free money.

I don't think there are enough stupid people in the UK for farage to be voted PM.

First past the post is flawed when there are more than 2 parties, but even so, just don't think enough people want the UK to be owned and run by the likes of Thames water or other foreign owned companies.
Report the old nanny ;-) • September 29, 2026 7:30 PM BST
other foreign owned companies.  Like the Ones Labour are happy to have providing our Windmill Power ?
Report the old nanny ;-) • September 29, 2026 7:32 PM BST
I wonder who will own all these new Data Centers that are in the Pipeline ? will they be British companies ?
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 7:33 PM BST

would you like a foreign owned windmill company to run the UK?

theres plenty of stupid people in the yuk and peebrain is one

look how many voted for corbyn. i will wager peebrain didnt mention that at the time

its so typical of leftists to dismiss those they disagree with as stupid. they are so convinced they are right it leads them to absolutism and explains why leftist revolutions always turn to oppression

farago is at his high-water mark imo and wont get near it. ditto polanski

i have 2 big gripes with nige but hes remarkable in some ways. few could have done what he has, like him or not. no politico i can think of in my lifetime. and he gets a terrible press. the bbc cannot disguise their loathing and hes treated as a demon by the chattering classes
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 8:50 PM BST
Busy, would you want a company like thames water running the uk?

all most all the reform supporters on here find the question too difficult to answer, what about you?

Actually the British state effectively runs Thames Water (along with 15 other water cos). Or at least they are meant to, via Ofwat.
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 9:06 PM BST
surprised you didn't answer, given you have quite the reputation for opining on a multitude of topics, most of which you know very little to zero about.

obviously entirely your choice etc., and I wouldn't insult you by saying it's to difficult a question for you.

G'luck.

It's a difficult question for "team woke right", even busy couldn't comprehend it and completely missed the "LIKE" in the question.

We both know it's not the question that's rediculous, It's the lack of team woke right answering the question that's absurdly ridiculous.

Irrelevant?
Maybe your correct, Reform 2025 Ltd voters might be irrelevant as you say.

Maybe others think you just lack credibility as you continually use nonsensical, childish barbs such as "woke right" all the time in order to try and provoke a response.

Thankfully, nobody is biting.

Dixie,i want to see you severely admonish anyone using the term 'loony left' or similar, keep a beady eye out, nice one!
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 10:11 PM BST
the term woke right came about after flurry of right wingers start suing for hurty feelings, some even waste police time reporting non existent crimes like a picture of a T-shirt meme on social media (Lol, do you remember the tsunami of hurty feels you lot deluged the internet with over that? lolololool, 8647? lolololololll)

The moniker "woke right" has stuck, it's succinct and nail on the head descriptive.

Evening all, bit late to the debate, but...
Why was Burnham talking about changes to the triple lock coming in the year 2030?
Labour only have until 2029 before the next election, so how can they make promises beyond that?

Burnham has revived Labour chances and popularity after Starmer, no doubt imo, Reform and/or Tory alliance would've been a shoe-in for 2029, imo...he's got a similar "good guy" appeal that won Tony Blair 2(3?) elections...promise this and that, worry about paying for it years down the line...
Cannot see any party winning an outright majority if there was an election soon, and not sure who would buddy up with who
Report DixieDean60 • September 29, 2026 11:01 PM BST
lapsy, no need for me to call out truths Laugh

Escapee uses this term incessantly in order to try and wind others up, with a spectacular lack of success i'm pleased to say.
Using the term when it has no relevance to the question he is posing is unlikely to garner any reasonable response.
Report DixieDean60 • September 29, 2026 11:06 PM BST
Reg, Burnham can't get rid of the triple lock until then as it would break the current manifesto pledge.

Doesn't normally stop them from doing such things i know Laugh

It was a device to absolve labour of their manifesto promise to "Sort out adult care" in this parliament, by tieing it to funding from the triple lock adjustment in 2030 they can kick their promise off into the tumble weeds.

They're not called 2 cheeks of the same a4se for nothing.

Report Regbutler • September 29, 2026 11:16 PM BST
Agree Dixie, but that would mean Burnham having to carry out Starmer manifesto pledge, which you would think he could break by claiming it wasn't his manifesto?

I was suggesting it was a bit presumptuous to commit to a course of action for a year after your current mandate runs out? As if you were taking winning the next election as read...it's 3 years away, OK to put it in your election promises in early 2029, imo but otherwise too early
Report Regbutler • September 29, 2026 11:18 PM BST
Escapee, I was typing before reading your reply
That makes a lot of sense
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 11:18 PM BST
The triple lock is also being used to drown out any questions from the workers who have had an exact opposite of the triple lock enforced on them at the same time, namely the personal allowance tax threshold freeze.
After 5 years, it's now estimated to be costing full time workers about £3,200 pa (minimum, more if you're on a higher band).

The pensioners are quids in compared to an average worker because of triplelock/tax threshold freeze.
Report DixieDean60 • September 29, 2026 11:22 PM BST
He knows that breaking a big pledge like that would be curtains for him i think Reg.

They are obviously banking on all this feel good freebie stuff early on in his tenancy being enough to get him another term in 2029.
There has indeed been the Burnham bounce, but like Reform i think they may peak too early.
I agree that it looks like a hung parliament as things stand, the only worse thing than a Labour majority would be a Labour/Lib Dem/Green coalition Cry
Report Regbutler • September 29, 2026 11:24 PM BST
Triple lock pensioners are not usually typical Labour voters
Upsetting them would not materially affect Labour election changes, imo
Report Regbutler • September 29, 2026 11:24 PM BST
Chances, not changes
Report Cider • September 30, 2026 7:35 AM BST
Obviously plenty of pensioners got so fed up of the tories they didn't vote last time. Starmer notoriously got less votes than Corbyn. If their fuel allowance plan had been disclosed before the election, different story.
