Starmer take TWO , The unite Union were against this
Report the old nanny ;-) • September 29, 2026 6:01 PM BST
Ed Davey: it is "surely wrong" to scrap the triple lock to help fund proper social care, as the lock has been "an essential tool in the fight against pensioner poverty".

This is a very strange and Disastrous  decision  for Burnham to have made ,there are 13 Million Pensioners, a large proportion of whom will feel it is an attack on them
Report the old nanny ;-) • September 29, 2026 6:05 PM BST
Money Talks Bull walks , Burnham will regret this decision
Report the old nanny ;-) • September 29, 2026 6:07 PM BST
Sharon Graham, the general secretary of the Unite union says the government should not change the triple lock, and suggests government look towards the "super rich".Plain

The winter fuel allowance policy was reversed, she says, and Burnham's triple lock plans are also “something people will be scratching their heads at”.

"Why would you be looking at the pot of pensioners rather than the super rich," she asks.

The poorest pensioners won't be any worse off. They will just receive more UC.

When a claimant reaches State Pension age, their entitlement to UC ends because UC is a working-age benefit

Cider, are you saying pensioners can not qualify for benefits?
Report SirNorbertClarke • September 29, 2026 7:36 PM BST
BTW many people on a State Pension also work.

I use UC as a catchall term for benefits. Big deal. Fact is the less pension someone gets the more benefits they qualify for.

Report Cider • September 29, 2026 7:57 PM BST
Such as?
Report Cider • September 29, 2026 8:03 PM BST
There's only one real pension aged benefit I'm aware of that's income based, which is PC. But the income cap for that is deliberately set below the full new SP.

Other than that it is conditional outside of cash, ordinarily ill health/care requirements. Which apply, regardless of SP.

Burnham screws over the poorest pensioners by abolishing triple lock
Report barstool • September 29, 2026 8:40 PM BST
Not much point talking about what he his going to do in three years time when the train coming down the track this winter is about to run over him.
Report Cider • September 29, 2026 8:43 PM BST
I don't really see it, perhaps you are intending to say something but garbling it. There are no benefits I'm aware of that hinge on the level of sp increases. Anyone who qualifies for housing benefit for example wouldn't lose it because of an annual increase in sp. Or qualify for hb if the annual increase was low, when they didn't qualify previously.

I was responding to your ill informed post:

The poorest pensioners won't be any worse off. They will just receive more UC.

Not the OP.

Report Cider • September 29, 2026 9:00 PM BST
I'm saying that they can't qualify for UC. So most definitely won't receive more UC, regardless of the level of the sp.

You made a blunder, sh11tt happens.
Report Escapee • September 29, 2026 9:21 PM BST
I just found out that if you get PIP before you get state pension, it carries on in addition to SP, but you can't make a new claim if you already get SP.

A handy extra £195 pw for the 1.25 million 60+ getting pip (680,000 currently getting both Pip and SP)
Report Cider • September 29, 2026 9:30 PM BST
PIP is the jackpot benefit, especially higher rate x2. The incentives to game it are huge.

As I said I use UC as a catchall term for benefits. Big deal.

Report Early Morning Riser • September 30, 2026 7:05 PM BST
You can claim UC if you are of pension age but your partner must be under the state pension age, a mixed couple cant claim pension credit only UC.
Report Cider • September 30, 2026 7:18 PM BST

That makes absolutely no sense. Benefits is the catch all term for benefits. You simply got it wrong, sh11tt happens.
Report SirNorbertClarke • September 30, 2026 8:50 PM BST
Yeah, my mistake for thinking all benefits came under the term universal credit. Why would have guessed universal doesn't actually mean universal.
