it's ordinarily diesel, and in the only tank attached to the underneath of the van.
Diesel is pretty hard to manually combust. Unlike petrol.
They have not been charged with Fuel theft? its not a crime to sell on red diesel, it's just odd that it's so close to millions of litres of kero

That's the point, nobody steals petrol in that way, only diesel as the HGVs have 400 litre diesel tanks.

I've never heard of it case. Sure, petrol is quite expensive but most people don't run around with full tanks in passenger cars. You'd have to break into so many vehicles when it would only be one HGV that is parked out of the way and easy to access the tank. It's not completely impossible, but highly implausible.

what absolutely makes no sense is to claim that no explosives were found. a van full of barrels of loose petrol sloshing about, is, erm, very explosive

As far as I can tell, the petrol/diesel link is purely because the vans had stickers of a fake nonexistent company on the side "Fuel2You" (or similar)
