Prof Jason Arday – frequently hailed in the media as the "poster boy" for Cambridge University's "diversity drive" – must be feeling profoundly aggrieved. Because, over the past week, an ever-growing army of cynics have had the gall to query some of his most extraordinary accomplishments.
Not only have they accused Cambridge's youngest ever black professor of plagiarising the work of other academics. They've also called into question his claim to have raised more than £5m for charity. They've cast doubt on the notion that he once ran 600 miles in six days, 300 miles in three days, and 30 marathons in 35 days, partly with a broken leg. And they've asked how he can possibly claim to have featured in ITV's long-running social experiment Seven Up, given that its participants were born almost 30 years before he was.
Well, I for one am thoroughly appalled by these attempts to undermine Prof Arday's dazzlingly varied achievements. So I hereby call on the cynics to cease and desist.
After all, what sort of way is this to treat the first man on Mars?
You'd think they would show him more respect. To my knowledge, however, not one of them has applauded him for breaking Usain Bolt's record in the Olympic 100 metres. Nor have they given him any credit for writing Wolf Hall, Hamilton: An American Musical or The Collected Poems of Seamus Heaney. And if they've congratulated him on winning the Wimbledon men's singles title eight years in a row, I'm afraid I must have missed it.
Honestly. The sheer effrontery of these people. Who are they to say that he played no role in the design of Apple's first ever home computer? How dare they suggest that he has never climbed Everest in a mankini to fund a cure for cystic fibrosis? Do they seriously have the temerity to dispute that he once won the America's Cup on a swan-shaped pedalo?
Personally, I suspect that this disgraceful onslaught is motivated by nothing but jealousy, bitterness and spite. If so, you can bet that there's more to come. Next thing you know, these envious naysayers will doubtless be telling us that Prof Arday didn't direct the Godfather film trilogy, claiming that his second goal in the 1966 World Cup Final never crossed the line, and denying that he rescued more than 400 passengers from the Titanic.
What a shameful thought. Quite frankly, I think it's time we all showed a bit more gratitude to Britain's greatest wartime prime minister.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with Professor Arday. We call on universities not only to defend academic freedom and robust scholarship, but also to confront racism wherever it manifests itself, whether overtly or through persistent attempts to discredit exceptional Black academics.
There can be no place in higher education for campaigns that weaponise baseless accusations to damage reputations and careers. Universities must ensure that excellence is protected and that every scholar is judged on the merit of their work, not the colour of their skin.

People who want to believe are easy marks for the not-very-good and delusional. The Labour party is currently in the grip of just such a mania. Andy Burnham is only another kind of fantasist. According to him, after all, the big problems facing Britain in 2026 are Mrs Thatcher, Sainsbury’s and not enough mayors.

The fact that anyone at all is admitting to be genuinely encouraged by the lamest of the lame, the cheesiest of the cheesy, the gormless Andy Crapp filming dozens of tik toks, and then letting cop killers out of jail whilst simultaneously going on holiday before his induction has been completed, is definitely indicative of the terminal decline of this country, as we once knew it.
