£12 Million Lotto Winner

The 12 million was unclaimed, that means either the machine that bleeps was genuinely not working or it means the shopkeeper was being clever by making sure it didn't bleep then waiting as long as possible in the hope nobody came forward to claim they'd won it (180 day deadline), and then pocked it himself, if the latter is true he's come unstuck as the women played the same numbers all the time realised a jackpot was unclaimed and it had her numbers, shopkeeper also asked her mum who went to check the numbers if she wanted the ticket back, that could have been a massive bluff as he'd have known most people tell them to bin it, also convenient his CCTV wasn't working.

If she's paid for the ticket by cash rather than card, I don't see how she could prove she purchased the ticket especially with no CCTV footage, other than nearby ring door bell footage which would only be filed under circumstantial.

It would not be the first time a shopkeeper has tried this on, if you google shopkeeper steals winnings and go through the pages you will see untold stories,

^the shopkeeper had 'about 80 tickets' under the counter and swapped one of those small wins for the jackpot, they apparently paid out 6.5 mil to someone else and as far as I can see, he didn't get the money.

There is probably shopkeepers out there making small fortunes cashing in on vulnerable customers not knowing any better.


Why do people still buy tickets in shops, just make an online account, it can't be stolen then.

Probably the most gutting story I've ever read was someone with a direct debit set up, playing the same numbers every week won, thought they'd own £182 million, but their direct debit didn't go through that week as their was no money in their account to purchase the ticket so it bounced.

If you play the same numbers each week for that long you would know them off by heart.

The results are on the NL website straight after each draw and are available from multiple other sources, why ask a shopkeeper to check if your ticket is a winner instead of just checking the draw details online ?

Even more to the point, as mes says why not set up an online account as it is much quicker than having to fill out slips manually .

You'd think if the ticket was checked it would be logged
in the system as such, as being declared a winner.

Could be possible the mother had lost the ticket and said it was thrown away at the shop , but i thought if you made a claim then you are told not to give out any details etc , yet they must have gone to the papers with the story , i would think that would invalidate any claim .

The shopkeeper doesn't seem to have tried to pull a fast one as the £12m hasn't been paid out.

How does the ticket holder prove her case if there is no CCTV ?

Allwyn presumably know where the ticket was sold and the date/time. If she can tell them when and where she bought the ticket and it matches up she could still be in business.

Ticket sold was in early June, has 180 days to claim, ticket wasn't scanned as Allwyn haven't said it was registered, that would ring alarm bells if it was scanned then not claimed for 5 weeks, shop not allowed to sell any more tickets til 30 day investigation is complete, guessing that means it was that shop that sold it.

Reports said 'she's showed proof of purchase and doorbell footage from a hair salon showing her mum at the time.'
If Proof of purchase means she paid for it by card then Allwyn can match time/date/shop of sold ticket to her bank statement. If by cash, I don't see how she can claim it, even with ring door bell footage, would be seen to be circumstantial and her a chancer.

It's highly unlikely the machine that scans the ticket wasn't working, means the shopkeeper is on the fiddle, just putting a ticket aside, pretending it lost, checking numbers later, realising it'd won, waiting til Allwyn made it public the ticket was bought in the area, then the shop, then hope nobody came forward, then claim it himself, or give it to a family member to claim to look less suspicious. What is suspicious is no CCTV, even with renovation you're going to need CCTV for potential insurance claim purposes. I find it hard to believe a shop keeper would remove that security.

She said she played the same numbers for 20 years. If the woman is a chancer, she could look at jail time for potential fraud.

ticket was scanned when it was sold, not scanned when by the shopkeeper when handed over.

Seems like a highly unlikely error , being it was the jackpot Ticket ,if it was not scanned a Winner  HTF would anyone know they were the winning number for that week ,or do people stand behind the jump

Could be the mother , the ticket was put on , maybe the mother went and checked it as normal and was told it was the jackpot , but then the appeal went out and the daughter realised it was her numbers , asked the mother where the ticket was and she said oh it was thrown away .

What a strange comment Malay - this story is about a £12m unclaimed Lotto win and trying to unravel the actual truth behind this woman's claim.

Approximately 1/3 of the population play the lottery. So plenty care.

Mr Straw Man - what would be the point of the mother behaving in the manner you describe ? For a start she would be bound to be "looked after" if her daughter won such a sum and if she did manage to claim the win herself she'd hardly be able to keep it quiet . If your scenario did play out then all the mother needs to do is miraculously find the ticket down the back of the sofa or similar, then tell the daughter it hadn't been presented for checking after all.

It could be the mother is trusted to go and check the tickets and pick up any winnings , so the daughter may not actually check the winning numbers , this time the mother has discovered it is the jackpot and assumes the daughter doesnt know , she might then have written her name on the ticket and thinks i will wait a while claim it with no publicity  , then the daughter has heard on the news about an unclaimed ticket and recognises her numbers , asks the mother who then cant give the ticket back as she has written her name on it , so says it has been lost .

So the mother lets the £12m jackpot go unclaimed then Mr S M

No , she waits and claims the winnings herself , but the daughter must have found out through the appeal that her numbers won and asks the mother where the ticket is .

But once the daughter is aware of her numbers coming up then nobody else could collect the winnings could they, especially the mum, so what is the point

The chances of the mum claiming and keeping a £12m win secret would be absolutely zero. So just do what i intimated and "discover" the ticket from wherever.

People do odd things, and maybe we find out the whole story, or more likely assumptions are
made to support the eventual outcome.

Lottery company will have all data on winning ticket, so not hard to prove story
if they are telling the truth.

She said: “I said to Allwyn, ‘If it didn’t beep, was it a fault on the machine?’. They said it was a possibility but it’s highly unlikely. They said it could be human error.”

Owner of the Londia store Karan Kumar said: “Now they are doing an investigation. It would be amazing if she won.”

It could take up to 30 days for Allwyn to decide if Kath has won. She said: “I’m the unluckiest person to win the lottery because I don’t have the money. I’m trying not to think about what I’d do with the money in case I don’t get it.”

A spokesperson for National Lottery operator Allwyn said it is “the only major lottery that allows players to claim a prize if a winning ticket has been lost, stolen or destroyed”.

If you'd picked the same numbers for 20 years wouldn't you actually watch the draw, or at least look up what the winning numbers were online?

I've never bought a ticket but this sounds like the equivalent of putting on bets in a bookies, not watching the races or even checking the results, and then just handing the slips to the bookie to see if you had anything coming back

If the mother has the ticket and writes her details on the back , she could just say i put it on , my name is on the ticket , it is mine . I thought if someone claims they have won without a ticket then they are told to say nothing . yet they seem to have approached a newspaper . it could still be the shop keeper has given the ticket to someone else to claim , they have the ticket write their name on it and they know where it was bought . the shop keeper looks at the cctv to see when they bought the ticket and then destroys the tape .

There's plenty of folk in bookies place bets
and get them checked by staff,... Anything off this one I placed last Tuesday.

A bookie a few years ago said he had a punter who used to bet rev f doubles and trebles across the card for pennies etc , he just used to ask them the next day how much they made it and said yeah i make it the same or a few pennies different and pay them , they were never gonna check those bets .

Anyway there is a lot of coincidence for the shop keeper , a jackpot winning ticket , the machine not working properly , the ticket thrown away and the cctv not working .

There would have to be a lot of coincidences for any situation
to occur around the incident.

Then multiply in the odds of the 6 numbers copping.

But it's happened, and even if this turned out to be
a false claim, there would still be quite a story on
the unclaimed ticket, even more so perhaps.
