That something as minor as a football player having a match ban lifted makes front page news in another country, across the legacy media and headline news on legacy broadcasters. It's still gnawing away at them even after the team has been eliminated, and they start threads on betting forums. Trump is the most powerful man in the world, he likes to wield his influence. The story is worthy of a paragraph on the sports pages, it is not global news. Unless of course, you hate Trump and want everyone else to hate him.

It is minimal. An average player for a poor team had a one match ban rescinded. It did not impact the result, or the course of the world cup. It is anti British as we have (or used to have) a strong sense of fair play. But using influence, even to cheat if necessary is very much part of US culture. Not surprising in the least that he tried it, a bit more surprising that fifa played ball. Global headline news it isn't.

I agree that the main villain of this episode is Sycofantino. His obvious toadying is the real story. We all know what Trump is like by now.

Listen people can like Trump but obviously admit he made a mistake. FIFA are obviously an organisation who IMO lack ethical values but we can all agree the tournament has been well organised, entertaining, good crowds and hopefully some good matches coming up.
