Before Brexit export of goods to the EU and the world were declining because of the cost of manufacturing in the UK and the offshoring of production of some of our commodities

In contrast the export of services has boomed to the EU with UK service exports 28% higher than 2019 in real terms

As evidenced by the performance of EU economies like Germany the EU isnt a silver bullet. It would cost tens of billions a year to join yet we cant even find £5billion for defence, Isnt one of the conditions to rejoin to join the euro which even Gordon Brown identified would be a disaster (remember the 5 tests)

I dont mind the UK negotiating changes to barriers to trade with the EU (like vets certificates) but needs to be benefit the UK

Negotiations with EU on trade barriers is difficult because they hold whip hand so Englands deal with EU is always going to be worse than it was when they were a member because EU is massive compared to England.
So businesses who trade in EU were always going to lose out with Brexit, many decided not to invest in UK sites and put their investment into their EU sites.

i think its a bit more complicated than that

The multinational companies trade around the world and a bit more paperwork wont deter them from trading

Its the SME's that trade in goods that have struggled cos the fines are prohibitive if they get it wrong

I thing some progress can be made if the trade off is acceptable

As mentioned before the trade of services to the EU has boomed since Brexit
