They just won't give up Cider, the local rag (Kent Messenger / Kent Online) headline today is "1 in 4  Kent Leave voters would now vote Remain" even though they only asked a small sample of the 2m or more who live here.

Ya can't beat a bit of the ould sovereignty!

The most in depth analysis of Brexit by the national bureau of economic research has shown that;

The UK has reduced GDP by 6-8%,
Investment by 12-18%
Employment by 3-4%.

Britains OBR;

Reduces long term productivity compared with being in the EU by 4%.
Imports and exports down by 15%.
Savings to the UK budget from not being in the EU have far out weighted losses from not being in the single market.

Happy Birthday!

More guesswork dressed up as fact .

Do your experts say what the effect on GDP has been of allowing a load of shysters and freeloaders to claim benefits when they should be working ?

EU just passed "toughest yet" illegal immigrant laws last week.

Brexiter's gonna need a sick bag if EU stops the boats and UK doesn't

AI Overview

The EU recently advanced a major legislative overhaul to curb illegal immigration, focusing on accelerated deportations and stricter border controls. The centerpiece of these measures is the Return Regulation, which introduces tougher policies to process and expel individuals without the legal right to remain in the bloc.

Key proposals and measures include:

Return Hubs:
Establishing facilities outside the EU where undocumented migrants and rejected asylum seekers may be transferred and held while awaiting deportation.

Extended Detention:
Extending detention limits up to 24 months (with possible 6-month extensions) for individuals who are not cooperating with authorities or are deemed a security risk.

Mandatory Border Procedures:
Enforcing 7-day initial asylum decision deadlines and screening checks at external borders to quickly filter out inadmissible claims or those unlikely to need protection.

Europol Task Force:
Creating a coordinated center to dismantle transnational human smuggling networks and boost forensic and intelligence support.

It's like saying it's hot in here because the air conditioning is broken. Lol what would the temperature be if we hadn't broken our air con.

Escapee must be one of those naive ‘refugees welcome’ people who think that the refugees that are arriving on our shores are coming directly from the war torn Middle East rather than being some blokes from a tent city in the EU.

nonsense 'shrewd' dude

I'm just as sick of them as most on here.

Me, I'd stop the boats within a couple of weeks of becoming PM. I wouldn't mess about.

Okay. Fair enough Escapee.

Not sure how Brexiteers will need a sick bag about the EU stoping small boats then if most of our small boats are coming from the EU.

If we'd stayed in the EU, we'd have the new EU laws that allow us to stop the boats (allegedly).

That’s the best reason for staying in the EU yet.

Do you think Brexit would ever have happened if EU headquarters had been in England? And could possibly have been in England because they were big hitter in EU, unreal input into laws.  EPA 90 was copied by many in EU and world wide.

We never got Brexit as it should have been and Burnham wants to reverse it, so we need a Reform UK government to implement it really.

What is it from reform you want on Brexit ?
I know industry sectors don’t want Brexit for a fact because you are double regulated.
I’m not trying to have an argument here, I’m interested to know what benefits reform can perform on brexit.
Seems vague to me.

These so called expert institutions cant even accurately forecast inflation, economic growth in this economy never mind in some alternate reality  where we never left the EU. Perhaps they were the same experts who signed off the business case for HS2

People just parrot figures they hear on the media without question

Its impossible to forecast accurately and isolate the impact of big economic shocks like Covid on the UK economy if it had stayed in the EU

The impacts on trade are complicated.

Before Brexit export of goods to the EU and the world were declining because of the cost of manufacturing in the UK and the offshoring of production of some of our commodities

In contrast the export of services has boomed to the EU with UK service exports 28% higher than 2019 in real terms

As evidenced by the performance of EU economies like Germany the EU isnt a silver bullet. It would cost tens of billions a year to join yet we cant even find £5billion for defence, Isnt one of the conditions to rejoin to join the euro which even Gordon Brown identified would be a disaster (remember the 5 tests)

I dont mind the UK negotiating changes to barriers to trade with the EU (like vets certificates) but needs to be benefit the UK

I also dont like the EU supportin Putins war machine by still buying its oil and gas and leading to the deaths of thousands of Ukranians

Negotiations with EU on trade barriers is difficult because they hold whip hand so Englands deal with EU is always going to be worse than it was when they were a member because EU is massive compared to England.
So businesses who trade in EU were always going to lose out with Brexit, many decided not to invest in UK sites and put their investment into their EU sites.
Common sense really

i think its a bit more complicated than that

The multinational companies trade around the world and a bit more paperwork wont deter them from trading

Its the SME's that trade in goods that have struggled cos the fines are prohibitive if they get it wrong

I thing some progress can be made if the trade off is acceptable

As mentioned before the trade of services to the EU has boomed since Brexit

Good post Rothko but multinationals are penny pinchers too nowadays
