Just posted this on the horse racing thread, so I'll post it here as well.

I'm very confused. The UK politicians and media are now highlighting today the problem for the UK mainland with the Common Travel Area and the potential for migrants to arrive in the UK through Ireland.

It's just that in Ireland for the last 2/3 years it is now accepted that a significant, if not the majority of, migrants, arriving into Ireland, are coming from the UK. Is it one or the other, or a bit of both?

Rioters set fire to homes, buses and foreign businesses after an anti-immigration demonstration spiralled out of control in Belfast yesterday evening.

Chief Constable Jon Boutcher told the BBC this morning: ‘Last night we rescued so many families. Taking families – a baby as young as two months – out of their address to safety, taking them to police stations.

He stressed: ‘These weren’t just families from ethnic minority communities, these were families from across communities that were caught up in this vile behaviour last night. There is absolutely no excuse for it.’

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton's attacker Anthony Esan pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possessing two bladed weapons in January.

A uniformed army officer who was repeatedly stabbed with two knives told his wife that his attacker had tried to "cut my head off like Lee Rigby", a court has heard.

Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, who was targeted in the street near Brompton Barracks in Chatham, Kent, in July 2024, told Maidstone Crown Court on Monday he was grateful to be alive.

The assailant Anthony Esan, 25, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possessing two bladed weapons in January.

Lt Col Teeton tearfully told the court during the first day of an expected three-day sentencing hearing that he was "forever in gratitude" to the "heroes" who came to his aid during the attack in Sally Port Gardens.

The assault left him with a large wound to the right side of his neck, stab wounds to the front and back of his chest and abdomen, his lower abdomen, right groin, right upper arm and left thigh.

He said: "I still relive the incident in my mind; I actually think it is a blessing that I was unconscious for much of it as it means that I am unable to remember a large part of being attacked."

Lt Col Teeton, a serving officer for 26 years who has been on two tours in Iraq and two tours in Afghanistan, praised those who helped him, including his wife Eileen, for their "courage".

"They are all heroes, and I am forever in gratitude to them," he said.

Wife stares down husband's attacker

Mrs Teeton stared down at Esan in court as she described how she had rushed to help a soldier on the ground before realising it was her husband.

"I watched horrified by his continued savage attack, and realised it was my husband on the ground," she said.

In her victim impact statement, Mrs Teeton said her husband asked her in hospital if people at work knew what he "tried to do to me".

When she asked what Esan had tried to do, he replied: "Cut my head off. Like Lee Rigby."

The off-duty soldier, 25, was killed by extremists in 2013 near the Royal Artillery Barracks in southeast London.

Prosecutor Alison Morgan KC called the 2024 attack "vicious and deliberate", and told the court that Lt Col Teeton had been targeted because of his appearance as a soldier.

In the lead up to the attack, Esan had conducted online searches on knives, a terrorist attack that happened in West Africa and searched "Woolwich soldier murdered", which Ms Morgan said was a reference to the 2013 attack.

Ms Morgan said Esan had asked Lt Col Teeton if he could borrow his phone because his moped had broken down and he needed to call for assistance.

When Lt Col Teeton was distracted, Eras used two knives to inflict multiple stab wounds.

Esan had made several failed attempts to join the British Army, including in 2021 when he was rejected for "psychotic disorder" and eczema, after he was reported the year before to mental health services that he was hearing voices.

But what was the outcome ? Politicians actually took a bit of notice for once, especially Heseltine, and Liverpool began a regeneration.

"I said to my daughter: 'Do you want to go there, and see what's going on?' So we did, on our bikes.

"I went into the corner of a little shop because I didn't want anything to blow up and burn me up. We were like nurses because all the wounded were coming to us. I saw guys with their hands sliced open, skin hanging off.

"I took them ice water, I washed their wounds, and told those that are not that injured, 'go back and fight' because I didn't care.

Report Cider June 10, 2026 8:44 PM BST
On the afternoon of Saturday 6 August 2011, about 300 people walked from London's Broadwater Farm estate to Tottenham police station.

They are seeking "justice" and "answers" over the death of a local man called Mark Duggan, who had been shot dead by police two days earlier.

"We went down to the protest with the family. We went down there to talk to one of the head police officers and they said it would be a few hours.

"Ended up, we were waiting for about five hours. Then one of the head police comes out and says, 'the police can't deal with this right now', and we have to come back another day.

"People started to stand in the middle of the road to stop the traffic to show them we're serious, that we're not going to go away.

"I remember myself personally lying in the middle of the street spread-eagled, so traffic's not passing here.

"I lie down in the road, then others joined me. It got to about maybe 8pm, and I remember the chief of police, whoever it was, he wasn't coming out again.

"And I thought - we go to war."

What followed was the most severe civil unrest the UK had seen for a generation.

For five nights, London was engulfed by fire and violence.

The uprising spread across England, including to the cities of Birmingham, Salford, Manchester, Liverpool and Nottingham.

Some rioters described the affected areas as "combat zones"

At the end of the rioting, five people had died, including a 68-year-old man who was attacked while attempting to stamp out a litter-bin fire in Ealing.

Dozens of people were left homeless and more than 200 people were injured, the vast majority of them police officers.

There was no government inquiry into the causes and consequences of the riots.
Report PorcupineorPineapple June 10, 2026 8:47 PM BST
I mean, as arguments go that is inane.

Going back some 45 years for a bit of whataboutery. Saying the govt took a bit of notice. Ha! The riots were followed by the Chancellor calling for managed decline of the city and the strangling of the docks over the following decade. Liverpool's population declined by about 15% over Thatcher's reign. Heseltine was the outsider who fought against his own government after he saw the conditions here. Hardly "especially". And the reason for the riots, the police brutality of black people, were apparently fixed by the Garden Festival now.

And if you want to pinpoint a sole reason for the regeneration of the city, such as it is, it's the EU. We received millions from Objective 1 funding. Liverpool One, the cruise terminal, the revamp of the airport - all due to the EU.
Report Cider June 10, 2026 8:47 PM BST
"It was an absolute warzone. I walked up there, saw about five youths, all faces covered up. They set a wheelie bin on fire and threw it into the riot police.

"I saw about 16 men, all in grey tracksuits. They came from other parts and said: 'Today, we are putting down the postcode war. Today we're here to help you.'

"And I call them soldiers. And they stood united together on the frontline, pelting the police. And that was really, really nice."

"Everyone was scared to start it off. So, someone dashed a stone at a Maplin's window.

"And then it all kicked off. It was like, 'I'm going to get four TVs - well, I'm going to get five.' It was no drama, no stress, everyone had the power. Everyone had the strength.

"The police weren't in control. We had the power."

"I actually found this iPod and as I picked it up, this girl was looking at me.

"It's just like that rush where you think, 'oh, my God, you can get anything.'"

Firefighters are called to Enfield, Brixton and Walthamstow.

"Everyone just clicked and said, 'yeah, this is our chance'. Do what we have to do. Cause mayhem. It felt like we were on a leash for years and we've come off that leash.

"Every type of person was there. There was some guy, a white guy, in shorts, flip-flops and a straw hat.

"It was really enjoyable, actually. At one stage, it was like a street party. I just went down there as a spectator. I really did.

"Lots of us went along, just to watch, but found ourselves caught up in it."
Report Cider June 10, 2026 8:49 PM BST
"I went to see how they were getting things, and they were sliding underneath the shutters and that.

"So I think to myself, 'I'm not getting on my hands and knees to get no goods'.

"So I came up with a cunning plan, and I stayed outside. Waited for someone to come out with something that I wanted - and I just took it from them. The car was round the corner and I just put it in the car, come back and do the same thing."

"It felt like a battle as there was police against us, and for the first time, we felt like we could actually take them on.

"Every rock we could get hold of, we were throwing at them. Stones, chairs, coins, shoes... anything goes."
Report Cider June 10, 2026 8:49 PM BST
"Everybody had matches, fuel, petrol bombs. Because we wanted to see everything on fire. To show them, 'what can you do now? There's nothing you can do'".

Report Cider June 10, 2026 8:52 PM BST
"What made everything stop? Easy. The shops ran out of stuff.

"Currys went instantly. All the phone shops went instantly."

"At least I can tell my kids when I'm older, and my grandkids, 'I've been involved in a riot'. Nice little story for them, isn't it? You know, like World War Two and that with my great-grandads.

"I do not regret it. If it was to happen again, I would happily join in. Anything against the police, I would happily join in.

"Everybody feels happy that it happened. Everybody."

"I wasn't there for the robbing. I was there for revenge.

"I'll always remember the day that we had the police and the government scared. For once they were living on the edge, they felt how we felt. They felt threatened by us.

"That was the best three days of my life."

I'm just pointing out that the strongest regeneration came from EU funding. Where I'm from (the north end, close to Goodison) you couldn't move for things like fixed up roads and street lighting with little banners on proclaiming how the Objective 1 funding paid for it. We went from managed decline to actual regeneration. Others might object about how their contributions were being spent and they're welcome to do so. Today the Progressives and their Useful Idiot supporters are pretending that their insane "Open Borders" and "Indefinite Leave to Remain" policies have had nothing to do with psychopaths attempting to behead citizens on the streets of Belfast.

Last week they were trying to pretend that DEI/Anti-White Racism Training had nothing to do with the murder of Henry Nowak and the abject police handling of it.

My God these sick charlatans have got some blood on their hands.  Rivers of it.

No inquiry needed to find out why people just rioted in NI. There's a video clip of a Sudanese immigrant trying to saw someone's head off, sitting on him after gouging his eyes out.

It's not even a new one, just an update on the old Marxist 'false consciousness'.

Yeah, you might even want to check my OP on my Russia thread from yesterday. Some of us have been way ahead on this for years.

arf!

Just giving facts. Please do tell me how managed decline and killing the docks was so good for the city, while the clearly findable evidence of Objective 1 funding and what it did was a nothingburger.

Sorry for any feelings bruised.

And the reason for the riots, the police brutality of black people, were apparently fixed by the Garden Festival now

utter sh1te from porcypie

the chancellor calling for managed decline? id like to see the evidence for that

the harbour board and the unions were utterly incompetent and unwilling to change in the face of huge competition from asia in particular who undercut them at every turn and they simply would not change anything. working practices were a joke and many dockers would cover for each other when they wanted a sneaky day off and management were too scared of a strike to do anything about it. they were equally culpable for the unmanaged decline

although we did get some very trendy bang&olufsen stereos from a leaky container. in fact, the whole estate did. so there were some benefits

lpools population had been declining (im one of the departed) for a while but its all about fatcher for you, never about the virus of socialism that infected the city and brought it top its knees. wanchors like you sit it out because youve been on the state payroll for life and make no concessions or suffer any hardship because you are feather-bedded against reality

lpool wasnt a red city for a long time and didnt elect a labour mp until 1923, 20 years after labour heartlands in the north and scotland. it was working class and tory, an oxymoron to a moron

From memory i could swear the Albert Dock had huge regeneration in the 80s along with the opening of Tate Liverpool at the end of the decade.

Doubt the EU paid for that as they didn't exist then

bodged both

spent zillions for little benefit to the 'community'

albeert dock is a relic. they didnt consider getting there. you have to cross a 5 lane highway and its really quite dull. like all state planning they just dont get it

i walked in and out of the tate within 10 seconds when i was confronted with a mural 'liverpools shame' about the slave trade. fro

Anyone remember the Brixton and Toxteth riots back in 81 ?

Largely caused by a certain demographic not being happy with the increase in "stop and search" and alleged racism by the old bill.

I remember.

The increase in "stop and search" , I've remembered that because you mention it.

At it's height, before it kicked off, I was stopped and searched 3 times on the 400 yard walk from my flat to Woolworths.

Crazy times, I doubt you got a handle on how insane it was.

Used the beeb, but there are literally dozens of sources quoting this.

The rest of it's just the usual cr@p and boring name-calling after a drink that you get from mitolo sadly, but amusing to see someone from Liverpool manage to not keep up with the news and still consider himself informed.
