This isn't 20 years ago, you can buy a reasonably decent phone for £100 these days unless you want to pay for a status symbol.
Phone thefts dropped off when phone prices came down, But then the great firewall of china went up and got higher and higher over the last few years.
A £100 UK phone will go for £300-£1,000 in china purely because it doesn't have state installed monitoring software on it.

Theft is theft and phone theft should be condemned as much as car theft or any other crimial activity. Someone might be stranded with no means to pay for a ride home if they lose their phone.

I agree with sageform, victim blaming is poor form. Wtf shouldn't you use your own property wherever you like. Those using them crossing a road and getting run over is a different matter, they are stupid and drivers hitting them should not be blamed.

In Sutton the vape shops on the high streets are usually nicely kitted out and decorated. It cannot be cheap, in my opinion. Now and again I'd look at the items on display at the window. The average mobile phone would cost at least £300 each; one or two as much as £700 meaning the mobiles alone would cost at £4k. And, together with the other items eg lap tops, iPads, etc, the window could be a home for over £8k.
Who owns these items on display? The shop owner or the individual item owner? However, despite the items on display are valuable and easily disposable for cash not a single smash and grab has ever happened or reported by any vape shop in Sutton.

Reading a good book right now. About money laundering.
We're in a world where our use of cash has dwindled to next to nothing. Almost everyone would agree, yeah? I was out last night at The Cavern in town. Even there, it's cash only now. Nobody really uses cash any more.
And yet...the number of bankotes getting printed every year is higher than every before.
And part 2...
If we do have cash, it's generally for little things. I'll always have a couple of fivers for tips. Might pay for a cab in cash still.
But of that new cash, the biggest by far is for the high denominations.
It's just the clearest, most obvious demonstration that this is all just going to criminals to hide from the law and avoid tax. It literally can't be anything else. And yet we still just go with it. Not just here btw. Same in America. Same in Europe. This is the stuff being used for drugs, for terrorism, for all that stuff.
All it'd take is for governments to come together and say, nobody genuinely uses much money, particularly big stuff. The days of us walking into Curry's and buying a telly with fifties are over. The only people using this are criminals. So we're stopping them. You've all got six months to pay them into your own bank account cos after that time they're not legal tender and won't be honoured.
Of course they won't do that though. Cos these pr!cks are all getting cash kickbacks themselves aren't they.

no cash is a problem for many. many older folks aint online and there will soon not be any banks. those with poor vision rely on cash. charities have seen a big drop in donations. tradespeople and cabbies and similar luv cash. the only tax-dodgers nobody cares about

as to the op ive heard its 120k a year, and thats just reported. not reported is who the phone-stealers are
china also has the expertise to unblock them and spare parts because thats where they are made. handy busines-make em, sell em and get them back
as long as you are causing mischief to the west the ccp will avert its gaze
as ive siad before, china should never have been allowed into the fto. it was only 20 years ago but theyve caused some upheaval since
moneyland was so annoying im not ready for more. the amounts from putin and chums upset me too muchtthey arent getting kickbacks. thats conspiracy bolloxno cash is a problem for many. many older folks aint online and there will soon not be any banks.

Top post BF 8.56pm,very true. Even a debit/credit card is heading towards getting outdated never mind cash with people paying on 'phone apps'. Ryanair and their app broke my heart going 'paperless',many oldies don't even have a good idea of a mobile. Re the ccp and their 'mischief' agree there too, it is a murky circle. The 86**, farrrages attempt to cause 'mischief' to the EU, dave and 'igor',hepstein, the spider in the web? really? what's going on?

Dave could have done a lot of good for everyone but is making a total hames of it. Agree he isn't wrong about everything but everyone will suffer for the wrong bits. A period in time when nothing happening would have been so welcome and too much caponey stuff shoved in not needed.

Of course, that's it. Prime location in the centre of everything. You couldn't make it up today and probably better not to go into too much detail. I hope it was the 'rates' that you were barred for. We all got older and i'll say it with certainty wiser, feckless times.

Move to the rural areas where a lot of things are still reliant on cash. Most churches would close without a collection plate, village fetes, coffee mornings, plant sales, bring and buy etc. are all cash and even some of the local shops are cash only still.

Why can't the owner of the stolen mobile activate a self-implode device hidden within the mobile as soon as the mobile is reported stolen to the police? A device to practically obliterate the mobile or key components of the phone from within could be the answer and deterrent, I think. This will render the mobile useless and un-saleable eg being sold in a vape shop.
A mobile version of infecting a colour dye on stolen money.

Based on reports as of March/April 2026, Downing Street officials did not contact MI5 or GCHQ after Morgan McSweeney’s government phone was stolen, despite it potentially containing sensitive information. Instead, the device was remotely wiped by government IT services shortly after being stolen in October 2025

Wiping out data is an insufficient deterrent. The mobile can then be re-set or re-configured again back to normality. A complete disintegration of components rendering it useless is the only solution to counter mobile snatching on an industrial scale daily and being sold in vape shops up and down the country.
Until the stolen mobiles are off the shelves and display windows in every vape shop up and down the UK high streets the proliferation of vape shops will continue. This phenomenon is akin to fobt in betting shops, and is solely to facilitate money laundering and criminality.
