Spain has already the most permissive migration laws in Europe, and the left-wing government now wants to give residence rights to all illegal migrants. Official data claims that there are 500 k illegal migrants, but independent sources say that the number could be higher, more than 1,2 million.

Pedro Sanchez, the Primer Minister, is surrounded by corruption scandals, and he´s doing everything he can to keep the power. He lost the last general elections, however, he did arrangements with far-left and nationalist regional parties to hold a majority in the Parliament. According to the polls, centre-right PP and the conservative VOX are going to achieve a remarkable majority in the next general election. Te far-left that did a coalition with Sanchez admitted that this massive regularization of migrants is the first step to give them the right to vote, before the next general election, so the left-wing and the far-left could change the polls. They believe that migrants are the solution to fight the massive loss of popular support they have suffered in the last 5 years. They also think that the future spanish society should be multicultural, and a mix of people from different continents and religions, in order to destroy what they call the "white straight supremacism and fascism" of spanish society.

As Spain is part of the EU and Schengen area this measure goes against all the rules about migration inside the single market. Other european countries are already upset with Spain and Jordan Bardella said that if Spain goes ahead with this rule, if he wins the next general election in France, he'll suspend Shengen Area and impose new rules for freedom of movement inside the EU. Jordan Bardella supports the idea that freedom of movement should be a right only for EU citizens, holding EU passports, and not for immigrants living inside the single market. This measure would impose again borders checks inside all european borders and airports.

My personal opinion: freedom of movement was amazing until Western Europe has started to receive a massive influx of immigrants and refugees. The system can't work if each EU member tries to have its own rules and doesn't respect the neighbours will. We can't have a fair system when one country opens the borders to everybody and then people move to the neighbouring countries. And this would be a big problem even if there wasn't EU anymore. Imagine France outside EU with a far-left Government and borders open to all kinds of immigrants, as they support; this would increase massively the pressure at the channel, with the number of boats crossing it exploding. So the solution is a very restrictive system, shared by all the countries in Europe. This system should go to referendum in all the members of the single market, and I'm 100% sure people would support it massively. Something like:

- freedom of movement only for EU and EEA citizens;
- residence rights only for high-skilled workers in some fields and big investors; immigrants without skills or funds would receive non-renewable visas to stay no more than 5 years ;
- citizenship for non-Europeans only after 15 or 20 years of continuous residence without criminal record;
- no access to benefits or social housing to non-EU and non-EEA immigrants, and restrictions to Europeans (only after 5 to 10 years of continuous residence and paying taxes);
- special conditions for rich and developed countries with similar cultural values: UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, USA, Japan or South Korea.

Once they get a residence visa they cross the border to France and then they try to come to England through the Channel. That's the goal for many of them.

I’d rather stay in Spain if I was them, maybe they want cold weather, who knows?
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- April 16, 2026 3:59 PM BST
If France withdraws from schengen, and stops them entering France, they cant
get to England via that route, job done, you've cracked it
in your own post.

He doesn't sound raging to me. But enablers simply have to say something

If they want to get here, they're not letting the lack of a visa stop them ffs.

At least we don't give EU people any additional rights.
Report MALAY April 16, 2026 5:34 PM BST
And vice versa in fact I think the Brits get less rights now but the fools voted democratic vote, clueless clowns but that is life.

Still more rights than Brits in Britain to be fair.

Listen it was a democratic vote, I found it very strange the vote was leave and it has been argued about for 10 years but USA has done more damage in a couple of months.  Brexit is like 2 children arguing over a sweet at nursery compared to Israel and Trump activities recently.

Your assertion is why are people bothered about Spain, ie it's another country. You prefer to concentrate on Israel instead Happy

They have to say something, empty vessel syndrome.
If they were as clever as they think they are,
they'd sometimes refrain and say nowt.

So Spain are welcoming migrants to compete for resources while discouraging tourists. Good luck with that. Perhaps our Government should offer £500 to any migrant currently in UK who would like to go to Spain instead.
