It looks like the Iranians only have to keep the price of oil above $100 a barrel for a month or two to cause rampant Trumpflation and sink the GOP's chances in the upcoming midterm elections.
Of course the psychopathic architect of the whole adventure gets off scot free once again.
Hate what they do to their people obviously, but Iran have been masterful and really pulled down Trump and Bibi's pants with this one.
Suckered them in to thinking they were weak and it would be an easy win, but instead it looks like they're showing the world that they can close the Straits at will and have got the West panicking and thinking let's never get in their bad books again. Can only imagine other countries that have also been attacked by Israel are quietly cheering them on as it's probably the greatest chance of some kind of lasting peace in the region.
As for Israel, I'd imagine the next time they come knocking at America's door they may find everyone hiding behind the couch.

It reminds me of that story about Putin and the Russian army. Before invading Ukraine he wanted a full audit of the army and their strength. So he asked the chief of defence who asked the generals, who asked the majors etc. Of course the sergeants were terrified of displeasing the majors so told them everything was hunky dory. The majors were terrified of the generals so said everything was great. And so on, until the chief of defence tells Putin that their military has never been stronger and the special operation will capture Kyiv in days.
I think Washington is similar, just replace fear with stupidity and hubris. Hegseth has sacked nearly everyone with operational nous in this area and, after Venezuela, thought it all dead easy. I think they genuinely can't believe that Iran have done them over so badly.

US Energy Secretary Chris Wright says that his country’s navy is not ready to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz. He wasn’t saying that on Tuesday. In fact, 48 hours ago, he declared on social media that the US Navy had successfully escorted a tanker through the key waterway. Oil prices dropped at the good news, only for the tweet to disappear minutes later before the White House confirmed that no, the navy had not accompanied a vessel carrying oil through the strait. And oil prices shot up again.
Keep up Chris

There is no explanation for that announcement other that blatant corruption and profiteering. The people that trump has surrounded himself with know that they can make themselves hugely wealthy simply by being loyal to him, as he won't take any action when they fraudulently acquire millions.

He made a bogus announcement that caused oil futures to fall 10% and then go back to their previous level when the tweet was deleted. If he couldn't think of a way someone could make money out of that, he shouldn't be an energy secretary or really in any job at all. afaik he hasn't explained how the bogus announcement happened.

I think the tweet was only up for a few minutes which doesnt smack of profiteering. Sounds more like he messed up. Which admittedly is bizarre for an energy secretary. My guess is the decision not to excort vessels was a u-turn that he hadnt been made aware of and US had to quickly backtrack

Many European airlines use contracts to get their fuel at fixed or capped prices for months, or even years, in advance.
By contrast, a number of large US carriers do not do this and could be exposed to short-term price increases as a result.
United Airlines boss Scott Kirby recently warned that a jump in air fares due to the higher costs would "probably start quick".
In the US, some have also raised concerns that a jump in energy costs could weigh on tech firms trying to build out their artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, hitting a key driver of economic growth.

The price of futures fell by 10%, giving someone, who knew this would happen, ample opportunity to cash in on an earlier transaction and indeed make another one anticipating the future deletion

The tweet wasn't about a "decision not to escort vessels", it was a statement that a vessel was being actually escorted through the strait. That was completely detached from reality. He hasn't explained why it happened.

Surely the likes of Saudi,Bahrain,Kuwait etc are on the blower to Trump, their economies are getting hammered. Sulphur as well as oil is a huge trigger for inflation.None getting through the Strait and will push food up through fertiliser.

They could make money off the flip flop but i assume they could have made more by leaving the tweet up for longer. While a quickly deleted tweet is consistent with a whitehouse phonecall telling him to take it down.
Ihe could have got one escorted out and tweeted about it while Trump was pondering whether he actually wants the strait open. The announcement that its not possible is more of a decision rather than a problem of logistics. All imo, it may well have just been a cash grab.

Was listening to something before about China's role in all this. They're very quiet but there seems to be a lot going on. Firstly, they are actively helping Iran in targeting and intelligence. Secondly, alongside Russia, they've essentially said they'll help re-build Iran once this is all over. But thirdly, they're sitting on over a billion barrels of oil but are refusing to release it as other countries are doing in an effort to stabilise the economy. Basically, they're fine right now but they want the west to suffer. They're basically backing Iran to hold out, to keep the straits shut and push oil up and really really hurt western industry. Everyone will end up blaming Trump and they will attract more business from it, as well as being a leader of the new global south alliance against the thieving violent west. Couldn't really be going any better for them.

The telegraph wrong as usual. Inflation doesn't help pensioners at all as it erodes the value of savings and non-public sector pensions. State pensions have always been linked to at least inflation. thatcher stopped the previous link to earnings in the 80s.
In "normal" economic conditions earnings will always rise by more than inflation or 2.5%, so the triple lock is just a link to earnings. We haven't had normal for a while though and with AI on the horizon possibly we never will.

dave, most pensioners will only have a few thousand in savings.
Those who take 25% lump sums more than likely will pass it straight on to their children.

I don't agree with you on that, but in any case inflation increases obviously don't make pensioners better off and inflation increases were in place before the triple lock (the higher of earnings/inflation/2.5%). So the telegraph is blatantly trying to stir up intergenerational strife by claiming that high inflation/triple lock benefits pensioners.

Everyone should take a read of the 1970's starting with the 'Nixon Shock', inflation and the 73/79 oil shocks.
Might give you some insight to how old playbooks are constantly regurgitated for gains
