I'd be tempted to lay 2026 for Starmer going at the prices. If it was gonna happen over Mandelson it probably would have done by now. Looks like they just don't have a credible replacement and aren't gonna do it for the sake of doing it. If they can pin the blame on McSweeney and tack to the left a bit more that could assuage the back benchers and members.

Meanwhile, what odds on McSweeney being the next defector to Reform?

Mandelson had backing of farage as we already know.

Farage was even touting himself for the job before
he got ridiculed.

It's not epsteins pedo crimes that are bringing down
Mandelson, it's Mandelson's traitorous leaking of state
secrets to epstein.

He was tolerated as ambassador by many as they thought
his previous contacts in USA and links to Trump might
help UK through a difficult period.

Once his treachery was unveiled by release of epstein files
he became untenable.

It's quite a sad indictment of where UK is at
that so many supported his appointment in first place
and that had he not leaked stuff he still would be in place.

Lapsy states :
I would re iterate my point that Labour are doing ok, wage growth up,inflation falling , GDP per capita growing, good relations world wide and migration collapsing to circa 200k. It would be a wrong move to rid i would think.

Inflation falling ? It was up to 3.4% in December 25, having been 2.2% when Labour took over in 2024.

Migration "collapsing" is hardly down to anything Labour have done , there was a large increase in emigration from 517k to approx 693k which accounts for 40% of the drop over the year. And lets not forget that a lot of the measures that have been taken to reduce immigration were actually introduced by the Tories.

And unemployment is up to 5.1% now compared to 4.4% when Labour took over.
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 9, 2026 8:42 PM GMT
Net Migration: 204,000 (down from over 600,000+ in previous years).

Immigration (Inflow): 898,000 people arrived, a 31% decrease from the previous 12 months.

Emigration (Outflow): 693,000 people left, a 7% increase.
Report lapsy pa February 9, 2026 8:43 PM GMT
Inflation is fc 2.3% for Summer 2026.
Migration figures are correct, they are reasonable rather than the previous 1 million +

Report DixieDean60 February 9, 2026 9:08 PM GMT
If we relied on economic forecasts lapsy we could all make a mint !  even if correct it's still higher than when they took over.

As mentioned, the tories had taken measures to reduce immigration that have now bedded in, little of the decrease is down to Labour initiatives.

As for the UK being viewed more positively , which metric are you using rather than your own perception ?
Try asking the people who really matter (the UK electorate) what their views are of this government !
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 9, 2026 9:12 PM GMT
As target is 2% then it's likely to be higher than the 2.2%
that was caused by draconian interest rates imposed by boe
when it went out of control due to imported inflation.

When looking at inflation you really should be looking
at inflation and interest rates... (and unemployment)

One may be a price worth paying for another but getting
them all in order is better.
Report lapsy pa February 9, 2026 9:18 PM GMT
You are right,it is my own perception.Biden hated Johnson, the EU did not get on with him or the UK for their attitude, relations with next door neighbour Ireland were rock bottom, do you think it is fair to say Starmer has improved the negative feeling?
Report ----you-have-to-laugh--- February 9, 2026 9:22 PM GMT
When sunak was booted, interest rates were 5.25%

If they were held at 5.25% inflation would likely be negative figs today.

Boe cut rates to 3.75% giving 5 cuts of 0.25%.

Pretty much as would have happened as predicted. They are predicting
a further cut of 0.25 this year, and a possible 2nd cut if
things go to plan.

Obviously cutting rates is thought to be inflationary
