Once the local elections are done, anyone
will be able to put the boot in without being
labelled disloyal.

An interesting snip from a newsletter, but is very true and very relevant:

Kier Starmer's position has not improved, but it has stabilised a bit because Labour MPs have looked into the abyss, and the abyss has looked back and said "you remember that the HMRC investigation into Angela Rayner is still ongoing, right?"

Then they've looked into the abyss some more and it has continued: "and you know that West Streeting has a much closer personal and political connection to the disgraced Peter Mandelson than Kier Starmer."

The abyss, growing quite chatty at this point has added "and come on, Shabana Mahmood is not going to win a leadership election. Labour members are not going to pick the border-tightening home secretary, are you nuts?"

Starmer's reported condition - incredibly unpopular, shorn of authority, probably un-reelectable and yet will stagger on for want of an alternative - is just the new normal of how Britain is governed. It was also true for two-thirds of May's premiership, half of Johnson's and all of Sunak's.

caveat emptor and all that

Don't know who wrote that, but (laughably) the claim from the new administration was country first, party second.

There will be more humiliating files released and publications.

Labour will lose Wales for the first time ever.

Starmer has already lost any credibility or authority he ever had. Now he is just feeble and broken. Hated by the country, and now hated by his own party. Will they tolerate this as the next option could be even worse? I think maybe 10% chance.

There's a bit of a plunge taking place on Jan-Mar, Into 5.1 (9.5 yesterday)

Starmer would have to resign within 2 weeks for that to pay out

Sarwar, Scottish Labour, sticks it to Starmer and twists the blade in.  Starmer won’t see the week out at this rate.
Report yak hunt February 9, 2026 2:57 PM GMT
I wouldn't be the least surprised if Sarwar is replaced before Starmer.
Report LoyalHoncho February 9, 2026 3:04 PM GMT
Most unlikely but that’s what makes markets!  Laugh. Love  Labour have a superb sitting M.P. in Scotland, Ian Murray, but he was too frank with Starmer and got removed from his job.  Pity he’s uninterested in devolution so will never get the Scottish gig.

The plunge was after lunchtime when Downing Street announced that Starmer is not resigning, which is a coded way of saying he absolutely definitely is resigning
Report LoyalHoncho February 9, 2026 3:24 PM GMT
Just “tidying up his affairs” as he prepares to “pursue future projects”?
