Good stuff Dixie ,, one of my fav albums from the 70,s ... Dillinger v Trinity  Clash  Cool
Report DixieDean60 November 15, 2025 12:30 AM GMT
Some great reggae recordings in the late 70s and early 80s String.  Listening to John Peel first got me in to that type of music. Dillinger was still performing a few years back, Trinity unfortunately passed away in 2021.

Still have loads of vinyl from those days - Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru, Steel Pulse, Mikey Dread, Misty In Roots , Aswad (before they went mainstream) etc.

Always listened to the David Rodigan show on Radio London. Great memories of those times.
Report Stringvest November 15, 2025 11:44 AM GMT
John Peel .. now your talking Cool started listening to his show early 77 with the Punk explosion , he loved that Misty in Roots live Album , I saw them play at a uni gig with Sham 69  early days , ended up in chaos obviously , great days , gigs 3-4 a week .. no one knew that Roddy was white back then  Laugh
Report DixieDean60 November 15, 2025 1:49 PM GMT
I tuned in to JP for the punk /new wave stuff and initially was dismissive of the reggae tracks he played but soon came to love them. The live album by the Mistys is fantastic, still have my original vinyl copy, second hand CDs are 40 or 50 quid on ebay ! They are still together and have a couple of gigs lined up for next year.

I too never knew "roddy" was a white guy, first time i saw him on TV i though he must be an albino like Yellowman Laugh

The Hersham Boys are still going as well - they are playing the 229 club in Great Portland St next month, doubt it will be as chaotic as when you saw them though String Laugh

I dont go many gigs nowadays , more of a Barfly these days, too many infact Laugh
Report Stringvest November 20, 2025 10:42 PM GMT
Talking of gigs this mob were great live....  without doubt my favourite punk album , very underated and under played anywhere. .. WIRE ..  Album .. Pink Flag  .. 1977   and   Pogues 1st album  Red Roses for me .. we were watching the Pogues very early days and it was a good night out and turned into a good scene before it got silly... London was the bollocks for live music back then CoolLove
Report DixieDean60 November 20, 2025 11:11 PM GMT
So many bands were coming along at that time String, 999 was another fav from the John Peel days, did you see them ?  Emergency is a cracking song. They are still going, will be their 50th anniversary next year !

My absolute favs though were The Stranglers, Rattus Norvegicus in 1977 was a requirement for any lover of the genre, brilliant album.
Report Stringvest November 20, 2025 11:30 PM GMT
I liked 999 Singles , but never saw them live and dont remember anyone that did, thinking back , it was strange.. they just werent popular in my area .. there picture covers probly didnt help , they looked like they were posing for a catalogue Laugh  dyou know where they were from Dixie ?   Rattus  great album

Report DixieDean60 November 21, 2025 12:26 AM GMT
Yes 999 didn't look particularly punky but their sound was good. The lead singer (Nick Cash) was previously in Kilburn and the High Roads with a certain Ian Dury.

How about Siouxsie and the Banshees did you see them ?  The Scream is another corker of an album.
Report Stringvest November 21, 2025 12:43 AM GMT
No I never , they were poncy arty types from Bromley , Sign the banshees was regular grafiti back then   I saw the clash twice in 77 , i fort they were sh1te live and didnt like the way they kissed Don Letts arris either Laugh the Damned were good live but sensible was a palace pr1ck and the woosie wont play stab your back these days Laugh  im not easily pleased ... i prefer nutters like The League from Tunbridge Wells Cool
Report Stringvest November 21, 2025 12:52 AM GMT
Nick cash .. real name or punk name Laugh
Report Stringvest November 21, 2025 1:10 AM GMT
But i do have a sense of humour.. me and mates used to go and see  2  northern type acts ,, Ted Chippington .. Sh1te jokes and sh1te versions of old songs , so bad we found it funny,, and he was defo paranoid of us turning up at his gigs in half empty pubs Laugh and Frank sidebottom  proper nut that geezer..  they both regularly played at the cricketers pub behind the Oval cricket ground,, theres a great documentry about Frank .. called.. Being Frank.. crazy funny bloke  CULT
Report DixieDean60 November 21, 2025 1:33 AM GMT
I remember Frank Sidebottom, a proper eccentric, often made cameo appearances on the music progs, especially ones with Tony Wilson.
Sadly he died in his early 50s from cancer Sad

Nick Cash is indeed his punk name, real name is Keith Lucas i believe, no wonder he changed it Laugh

I take it The League are the Anti Nowhere's ?

Fad Gadget (aka Frank Tovey) was a post punk act circa 1980 that i liked as they were different, some cracking lyrics in their songs, Saturday Night Special a particular fav of mine.

ANGELIC UPSTARTS

ENGLAND

The red in the flag is the blood that was spilt
In the way that your forefathers tell
And never a country been so great
The stories Britannia coud tell

I never want to live my life
Away from the golden shores
There's never a country in the world
With the scent of an English rose

England, oh England, a country so great
The land of so fair and so true
There'll never be any colours like
The red, the white and the blue

Whenever you go to the far off shores
Ther's something that goes with you
The pride and the joy and the love that comes
From your mother of red, white and blue

You cold never be born under a flag that's like
The one of a Union Jack
St.George's spirit has never died
It all keeps coming back

England, oh England... (5x)

I used to go to Maidstone dogs at Uniteds London Road stadium in the late 70s and early 80s, great memories. The footy team played a few league teams in those days in the FA Cup, beat Exeter i remember and they lost to Charlton in a replay after the infamous Hales/Flanagan scrap at the Valley Laugh

Otherwise Crayford was the track i most went to, now sadly gone as well.  Went to Catford in the 90s, remember the big old toteboard there. Think it's housing now ?
